No USB device and no copy/paste (solved thanks)
No USB device and no copy/paste (solved thanks)
Hi Box users,
I am getting frustrated with my configuration.
Mint as Host and Win7 as Guest.
I can not copy anything from Host to Guest even though I have both settings on bidirectional.
Onother thing is I can't get any USB divice to work. If I click on Devices and then on "Insert Guest......" no window comes up and nothing happens.
Cheers,
Windoof

Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
USB requires that you install the Extension Pack and that your user name is in the vboxusers group.
As for copy/paste this is only for text and requires that you have installed the guest additions ( in the guest ).

Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
Still no go. Neither USB support nor copy/paste nor shared folders.
At start up of Manager I get:
One or more virtual hard disks, CD/DVD or floppy disk image files
are not currently accessible. As a result, you will not be able to operate
virtual machines that use these files until they become accessible later.
Press Check to open the Virtual Media Manager window and see which
files are inaccessible, or press Ignore to ignore this message.
When I click "check" I get the attached window which tells me nothing I could decipher. When I start the Win7 machine I get yet another warning. See attached pic A2. Ext.pack installed; vbox username registered;
I get no response when I click on insert Guest additions....... although I could do it twice before.
All I wanted was to work with M-Publisher in the guest system and save the files on the host system.
Greets,
Windoof

Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
First it shows that you have a shared folder that does not exist.
- In the guests setting under shared folders, remove the share that it says does not exist.
- Click on the Optical disk tab and release and remove the device marked as missing.
Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
That is strange. How could I have selected the shared folder if it does not exist? It is the ordinary "my documents" folder of the host system.
In "Optical Media" there is no option available to remove the device. All is grayed out:

By deleting or moving or renaming the folder after you selected it?Windoof wrote:That is strange. How could I have selected the shared folder if it does not exist?
If VirtualBox won't let you fix this, and you're not confident about editing XMLs yourself, then zip up the .vbox file and post the .zip here.

Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
That is something only you could answer my friend. Anyway you need to remove the share at this point and somehow the invalid disk as well. You may need to completely shut down everything VirtualBox and even reboot the host but it has to go away so we can proceed.
Once you have this to a stable environment we can proceed with one problem at a time.

Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
Thank you guys for your patience with me.
I will try to proceed as suggested.

How could I possibly delete move or rename the "my documents" folder on my host system? It's still there and it still wears the same name!mpack wrote:By deleting or moving or renaming the folder after you selected it?.Windoof wrote:That is strange. Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
Problem solved but I have another problem now.
I got only a 128gb ssd with Mint and Win8 plus the Vbox with Win7 on it.
A window just came up saying I got only 1gb of space left on my drive.
Can I move the VDI to my second drive to free some space or does it have to reside in the Vbox folder?

Don't do that. Move the entire VM, not just the sexy bits of it. See the tutorials section for how.Windoof wrote:Can I move the VDI to my second drive to free some space ... ?
Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
I knew this was coming.mpack wrote:Please provide the details for others benefit.Windoof wrote:Problem solved
Ok I try:
1. I reboot the host
2. I reinstalled the extension pack
3. I reset the virtual image folder to custom
Voilà, I could select USB devices and also copy/paste from Host to Guest and the other way around.
I still get this warning when I start the Manager:
One or more virtual hard disks, CD/DVD or floppy disk image files are not currently accessible...........
But it's working fine and I better don't touch it.
Thanks mpack and Perryg for helping me out.

Re: No USB device and no copy/paste
Up and running again with main menu editor but guess what? Yep next problem.
No Internet connection even though there has been zero change to the last snapshot.
The only thing I did was relocate my VirtualBox folder to another hard drive.
