Upgrading from 4.3.8 to 4.3.12
Greetings
I am running Virtualbox 4.3.8 on a Debian Jessie system.
Would like to upgrade to 4.3.12.
There seems to be no way to upgrade (yes I read through the docs/searched the forums).
Why is there no way to upgrade?

Re: Upgrading from 4.3.8 to 4.3.12
Sure you can upgrade, but first you need to understand that if you installed the version from Debian, you can not while using their version. If however you downloaded and installed from VirtualBox.org then all you need to do is download the new version and install it.
If you have the Debian version and want to install the new one then uninstall the Debian one and install the new one from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
Your guests will still work.

So I just use dpkg to install and that's it?
I installed originally from a file downloaded from Virtualbox website.

Re: Upgrading from 4.3.8 to 4.3.12
OK - - - so I was able to run the 4.3.12.deb file and it upgraded virtualbox - - - - but:
now I need to upgrade this thing:
. . . Extension_Pack_4.3.12-93733.
Tried clicking on the icon (which is what the manual says to do) and that brings up a copy of virtualbox.
No sure what post to find to beat my head against to decipher what to do now.
Would someone please tell me what it is that I need to do to get virtualbox homogenized again so that maybe I will be able to install a guest machine?
Please?
Dee

Re: Upgrading from 4.3.8 to 4.3.12
Double-clicking the icon works on Windows hosts, provided the "vbox-extpack" extension is registered. And yes, bringing up a copy of the VirtualBox GUI is exactly what it's supposed to do, because the extension pack is a plugin, installed from inside the GUI - not new software for the host.
If clicking the icon doesn't work then see Installing the Extension Pack.

From the User Manual, Chapter 1.5 Installing VirtualBox and extension packs
start the VirtualBox Manager (see the next section). From the “File” menu, please select “Preferences”. In the window that shows up, go to the “Extensions” category which shows you the extensions which are currently installed and allows you to remove a package or add a new one.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Re: Upgrading from 4.3.8 to 4.3.12
Weirdness!!
I had shut off the virtual machine.
Tried to get the extension pack to load.
No joy.
Started machine and this time it worked.
Seems like the Microsoft way of doing things rules here too.
(Reload restart and reboot with great regularity. I usually need to reboot when I have to shut the system down because of a power outage otherwise she's just there!)
That's for the help and hopefully someone else finds these meanderings useful!

Found this - -- thanks for the information.
Now I'm being asked for a password to do the changes and I can't remember the password. Is there a way to find the password that was used using CLI? Something else?
Many thanks for the guidance.

That would be the administrator/root password for your host.dabeegfarmer wrote:Now I'm being asked for a password to do the changes and I can't remember the password.

my 'root' password is not being accepted.
Any ideas?
This upgrading is proving to be a verifiable pain!!

Re: Upgrading from 4.3.8 to 4.3.12
Found what my password issue was.
I got rid of kdesudo and I had control back. (used my regular 'root' password.)
Thanking all those that assisted.
Thanks again!!
