Cannot create Windows7 64 bit guest with OEM CD

Post by stevecoh1 »

Hardware = Lenovo T540P (64bit)
Host = Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Vbox = latest, just downloaded, doesn't say what version. (why no help about???)

Load Windows 7 OEM DVD into drive
Create VM for it in VBox
Start VM

Immediately get error message:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine windows7.
VT-x is disabled in the BIOS. (VERR_VMX_MSR_VMXON_DISABLED).
with these further details:

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole {8ab7c520-2442-4b66-8d74-4ff1e195d2b6}

what is this trying to tell me?

How do I create this VM? I have been using vbox under ubuntu for years and never seen this.

All 64bit guests require VT-x, whether Win7 or Ubuntu. As the error message says, VT-x is available on your PC, but needs to be enabled in the host BIOS. Check with your PC manual or manufacturer.

Btw, all versions of VirtualBox are open source. If you mean that you are using the Ubuntu VBox fork then you need to visit the Ubuntu forums for support.

Thanks. I had no idea there was even such a setting in BIOS. Been awhile since I bought a computer. And yes, I did, after reading this, get the Official Version, not the Ubuntu "OSE". The Ubuntu site also tells you how to get the oracle version but their complicated instructions do not even work for 64 bit machines. THEIR instructions are complicated but going to the Virtual Box website and downloading from there was a breeze.
