I should have thought of that... sorry. Changed the reg setting to 4 (what does that mean/do anyway?) before rebooting after changing to Standard PC. No BSOD... woohoo! Then it starts discovering all the hardware, going by too quick to catch and document here, and freezes on Found New Hardware Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C.

Maybe it has something to do with my VM config:
OS Type: Windows XP
Base RAM: 1024MB
Video RAM: 8MB
Boot Order: CD/DVD-ROM, Hard Disk
ACPI: Enabled
IO APIC: Enabled
VT-x/AMD-V: Disabled
PAE/NX: Disabled
IDE Primary Master: sda1.vmdk (Writethrough, 232.89GB)
CD/DVD-ROM: Not Mounted
Floppy: Not Mounted
Audio Host Driver: ALSA Audio Driver
Audio Controller: ICH AC97
Network: PCnet-FAST III (NAT)
Serial Ports: Disabled
USB Device Filters
Shared Folders: 1
Remote Display: Disabled

Was it implied that I should have disabled ACPI and/or IO APIC?

I was curious about that too. After I made the change to the registry, I was able to turn off everything in Extended Features section. So yes, it still works with ACPI and the IO APIC disabled. Almost seems to run faster too but could be my imagination :)
