Don't see my usb devices attached

Postby Nissi » 1. Jul 2013, 15:29

Hi

This used to work. I'm struggling for some reason to see usb devices attached. I'm running Windows XP inside Ubuntu 13.04 as the host. Usb is activated under settings and the latest extention pack is installed, this I even reinstalled with no success. Please assist. Even trying new usb devices, virtualbox just shows no devices under settings and when I run windows XP.

Make sure you are in/still in the vboxusers group (linux host).

I have added vboxusers to the user groups. Must it be added in somewhere else besides users and groups in ubuntu? Is there anything else that I can do or check?

If you have just now added the user name to the vboxusers group you must at least log off and back in before permissions change, and sometimes reboot.

I too am having the same issues. I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04 and the current Vbox downloaded here w/extensions. Trying to run Windows 7 Ultimate (current)
in virtual and it will not see my usb thumb drives, phone or tablet. Ubuntu tells me that vboxusers is there as a user account.

I'm new to VMs.....help me learn, please.

@Leatherneck2111,

Add yourself to the vboxusers group and reboot the host.

In case you don't know how, in a host terminal run this:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
sudo usermod -aG vboxusers <your username>

Replace <your username> with the name you use to log in. Type your user password when prompted.

Do one need to delete everything in virtualbox and delete the program and reinstall everything if readding or adding vboxusers, even in terminal doesn't help to see attached devices? Anything else I can do if adding vboxusers and or doing everything explained in the other replies doesn't work instead of reinstalling everything? :D

God no, you don't need to do all that. Simply add the user, reboot.

Hi

I've tried everything, but no success. I even tried the command in terminal that was mentioned in previous post. I logged in and out, restarted. Even with vboxusers added in groups, I still can't add or see my devices. What else can I do?

The next step is to click the devices tab at the top of the guest and then USB. Does your device show and is there a check mark in it? Can you click on it and get it to activate?

No, nothing shows. it says no devices. But it does still shows devices it picked up before I had to reinstall virtualbox as it didn't want to open my installed guest OS. Those that show, is also not picked or present in the guest OS. Can those be blocking it?
