Upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04.1 killed Virtualbox 3.1.8 [CLOSED]

Postby JonCage » 28. Aug 2012, 22:50

I had Virtualbox v3.1.8 working well on Ubuntu 10.04 but upgrading to 12.04 seems to have stopped it running. When I try and start the service I get this:

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
 * Starting Virtual Box virtualuber
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
         available for the current kernel (3.2.0-29-generic-pae) or it failed to
         load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by

           sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

         You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
Waiting for the remote session to open...
ERROR: Virtual machine 'virtualuber' has terminated unexpectedly during startup
Details: code NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005), component Machine, interface IMachine, callee <NULL>

So I tried the suggestion:

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
 * Stopping VirtualBox kernel module
 *  done.
 * Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module
 * Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong

So I've checked the log:

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
tail /var/log/vbox-install.log

Kernel preparation unnecessary for this kernel.  Skipping...

Building module:

make KERNELRELEASE=3.2.0-29-generic-pae -C /lib/modules/3.2.0-29-generic-pae/build M=/var/lib/dkms/vboxdrv/3.1.8/build....(bad exit status: 2)
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-29-generic-pae (i686)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/vboxdrv/3.1.8/build/make.log for more information.
Failed to install using DKMS, attempting to install without
Makefile:163: *** Error: /usr/src/linux (version 3.2.24) does not match the current kernel (version 3.2.0-29-generic-pae).  Stop.

So I checked that log as well:

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
tail /var/lib/dkms/vboxdrv/3.1.8/build/make.log
  LD      /var/lib/dkms/vboxdrv/3.1.8/build/built-in.o

I'm struggling to work out what's gone wrong or how to fix it.

Anyone have any ideas how to proceed?

I gave up in the end and did the following:

1) backed up everything to do with virtualbox
2) uninstalled 3.1
3) installed 4.1 using this guide
4) after discovering I could now start the VM but not connect via RDP, I found something on the web telling me to try enabling vrdp by typing the following (Note: if like me you run your virtualbox under a different user such as 'vboxuser' you need to 'su' into that user before issuing the VBoxManage command):
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --vrde on

5) download guest additions from here:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.1.20/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.20-80170.vbox-extpack

6) re-install guest additions by typing:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
VBoxManage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.20-80170.vbox-extpack

Those aren't the Guest Additions, that's the Extension Pack. Which is what is in fact needed for RDP (the Guest Additions make no difference there).
