Had you read the manual you would have seen that "Hint" only works for Linux and Solaris guests, (assuming it still does). The OP was running a Windows guest as was the last Poster with a problem. Hence, since "Hint" doesn't work for Windows guests yours is not a "solution". Sorry to hear it was your last post in this thread though.

Well using the hint as specified on the below posted worked for me using Vbox 4.3 on a Windows 7 Host with a Windows 7 guest. I just needed to restart after changing the hint.

Apparently there are still those who don't know what "Hint" does. It is used to set the maximum resolution of guests. Not to set a specific resolution.

so if in VB Preferences>Display>Maximinum Guest Screen Size:
if set to Hint: <w,h>, the maximum screen size a guest can grow is <w,h>.
If set to "Automatic", The screen will grow to the native resolution of the host.
If set to "None", it can grow larger than the native resolution of the guest.

As I mentioned earlier, according to the manual it only effects Linux and Solaris guests.
However, as I mentioned in another post, At least on OSX hosts, if "Hint" is set, Windows guests always open at 1024, 768 no matter what the resolution is set to.

I had a similar issue, before I upgraded virtual box to 4.3.20 and installed the latest Guest Additions, the screen resolution was much higher in the Windows VM. After the upgrade, the screen size wouldn't go past 1280x1024.

Reading this thread, I tried setting Display->Maximum Guest Screen Size to Hint, and set the width/height to 1600x1200, but the windows guest would only go to 1600x768. I then changed Hint to None. Now the Windows guest can have a maximum screen resolution of 6400x1200. Doesn't look too good when set to anything above 1920x1440, stretched vertically. So I'm now using 1920x1140 in the Windows VM.

The native resolution for the host is 1920x1080.

Change Hint to Automatic. Restart your Windows VM, press Cmd+F. See how that is.

Solution is very simple select View and Autoresize Guset View.
It works for me without problems. :D

This is what I did to get the correct resolution choices back.

I unchecked all options in the View menu, I put the Windows 10 guest in Full Screen mode, then opened devmgmt.msc in the Win10 guest, uninstalled the graphics adapter(not the software).

While still in VB, went to Main VB window, then File > Preferences > Display and changed to Automatic. I then shutdown the Win10 guest. I then started the Win10 guest back up, got prompt to either enable Full Screen mode or Cancel, I chose to enable Full Screen mode again, it came up with the smaller resolution like before, but after I logged in to Windows I right-clicked desktop, Display Settings > Advanced display settings > Resolution, clicked down arrow and all the proper resolution choices were there.

I chose my resolution 1280x1024 and voila, my resolution is back and issue is fixed on my system.

I do not know if this will fix the issue on your system, but this is the way I fixed it on mine, just fyi!

My answer is this, as related to Cantasia:
Set the Video settings to the highest in the VirtualBox OS (in my case 1600x1200)
Open Camatasia>Record> choose "SelectArea" Custom (set it to 1920x1080)
It will put a green box outline up
Holding the corners of VirtualBox window stretch to fit Camtasia box.
Now you have virtually 1080P size.

I use Camtasia to screen cast and found I ended up with a Windows destop box inside of a 1080 box. Frustrating until I did the above. Hope this helps someone

I've tried most suggestions in this thread (except the Camtasia/Cantasia one which I don't know what it is) and cannot get resolution up to 1920 x 1080 as per the Host.

1600 x 1200 (highest res) cuts off the screen bottom and 1280 x 1084 cuts off the sides.

Anything else I might try?

Cheers.

EDIT: Host is Windows 10 32 bit. VB is Windows 7 64 bit. (I know, I know)

I had the same problem, in fact it is a bug that can be overcomed like this :
1. Switch to fullscreen (Host+F), then you will see that you get full HD
2. Adjust the resolution in the control panel to 1920 or what you like
3. Switch back to windowed screen (Host+F)
That's it Folks !

Notice to developper 8) : that this is still the case today in VM 5.2.12 which I run on Ubuntu 18.04 to guest Windows XP.

I had this running Windows 10 guest with ubuntu host.

Solution was to install Virtualbox Guest Additions, under Devices on the running guest, Insert Guest Additions CD ... download, restart, run the installer from the D: drive, seemed to detect display straight away and I now have full screen mode as expected  :D

Hmm. I don't believe that a discussion from 2012 has much to say about the new graphics controllers added in VirtualBox 6.x. I'm going to lock this topic.

But yes, the Guest Additions include the graphics drivers, so you must installs the GAs (in the guest) to get access to the special graphics modes. See user manual chapter 4 for installation instructions (or click F1 in the manager).

Also, in recent VirtualBox versions, the most convenient way to get a specific display size in the running VM is to use View|Virtual Screen x|Resize to <specific size>.
