frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
Virtualbox used to work well for me with Kubuntu Oneiric as the host and Windows 7 Enterprise 64 as the guest.
Since I updated to Kubuntu precise, it's now very unreliable. Mostly the entire system just hangs and the only way out is to press and hold the power button.
There are 3 different failure modes;
Perhaps 3 times in 4, it fails when Windows is starting - typically during the animation where the 4 coloured dots come together to form the flag. Sometimes this is a complete hang (from which the only way out is to press and hold the power button). Other times it's only the guest that hangs. The host carries on working but various apps progressively hang until the whole system does. In this mode, "kern.log" often includes references like "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 22s! [VirtualBox:2590]"
If it gets past the flag then it's mostly reliable until a suspend / resume where it will crash on resume after 2-3 suspend-resume cycles.
I've been looking in here and found a few references to crashes, particularly the thread "Kubuntu 12.04LTS crashes on vm start/setup".
In that thread, someone asks, "Does your system support VT-x? What happens if you enable it for this guest?". It is enabled.
The virtualbox version is 4.1.4 r77440.
Does anyone have any suggestions other than reverting back to Oneric?
Thanks in advance
JP

Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
Sorry to just add to this thread but I have the same issues with 12.04 and 4.1.6.
It doesn't just seem to be only on startup (where it happens most often) but also after a period of 1 to 2 weeks of heavy usage.

Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
You should update your VirtualBox version. There have been a lot of changes which should improve this issue. Don't forget to update the guest additions as well.
Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
So sorry. I do apologies. I missed out the 1 from 4.1.16. I'm actually at the latest version. The system has just crashed again, and now seems to be doing this every couple of days. Probably best if I move down to Ubuntu 10.04 again.

Host Ubuntu 12.04LTS
Guest WinXP
AMD quad proc
It seems that precise cannot handle VB with multiple processors allocated to the virtualbox. Reduce processors to 1 and it seems responsive and reliable albeit a little slow because of only 1 CPU. There is also a lot of discussion about UO APIC causing the problem, but Icould not turn it off (ruuning my multi-boot partition for XP), but reducing the number of CPUs to 1 seems to have fixed the problem.

Since i upgrade ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04, I could not use VirtualBox.
My host totaly free when i lunch a VM (XP or 7) , i'm force to hard reboot my host.
I try to reformat my host to fresh install, and try to install new VM ... same probleme.

Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
Are you using the standard Ubuntu kernel (Precise is at 3.2.x) or some home-brewn packages?

Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
Oh, and any other suspicious message in /var/log/kern.log?
Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
I have the same problemes 5 times crash after starting virtualbox. Before update ubuntu to 12.04 it works fine.
I adjust several parameters on virtualbox, no change.
My system:
Host: intel intelcore 2 Quad core, Q8300, ATI-Radeon HD4350, 4 GB RAM
Guest: WIN 7 64bit, 1GB RAM, 1 Proz., 64 MB grafik
Some times it woks very stable after booting windows.

Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
same problems here after switching from 32bit lucid pae to 64bit precise.
I have two machines here running Precise in almost identical set-ups with the stock kernel image
3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:52:17 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
On one machine (Intel C2D E-6600, nvidia 295.40 driver, 6GB RAM, ext4 on lvm on md mirror) running a Win 7 64 bit image makes the machine unstable. Starting a 32 bit Linux vm leads to a complete host freeze every second time.
The other machine (smaller notebook with AMD E-450, fglrx 8.960, 4GB RAM, ext4 on lvm on plain sata) runs the very same virtual box vms just fine.

Re: frequent crashes since moving from oneiric to precise
This weekend, i' made few tests.
With Virtualbox Extension Pack "Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.16" my host totaly freez.
Without Virtualbox Extension Pack "Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.16" my host directly reeboot.
All my VM crash my host with :
- VM logs empty and this msg on kern.log
VM on fedora i386
VM on win7 x64
Ps : befor ubuntu update my partition where in (Ext3) format...
