What does "lsmod | grep vb" tell you when run from a host terminal?
Also where do you or did you get your VirtualBox install from. Previous and now.

There may be some corruption in dkms or apt. If you have already removed the previous one and still get the "it is already installed" I would clean dkms and apt then see if it installs. You might also try to install by downloading the binary and using dpkg to install it.
