Sound problem on Debian 6 host

Post by Technologov »

hi,

I'm running vbox 4.1.8 on Debian 6.0 / amd 64 host:
Guest: WIn XP.

00:00:00.835 Audio: Trying driver 'alsa'.
00:00:00.835 Audio: set_record_source ars=0 als=0 (not implemented)
00:00:00.854 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.924 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.978 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.978 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM IN!
00:00:00.978 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM MC!
00:00:00.978 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM OUT!
00:00:00.978 Audio: Using NULL audio driver

The sound doesn't work. I have tried ALSA/OSS/PulseAudio backends.
It works in pure Debian -- in KDE I have sound. (it seems to use Phonon+Xine backends)
Any ideas ?

And the Host has an audio card that works? Most if not all audio problems with VB is due to incompetence of the user for the Linux audio system.

Ah, KDE, their crappy arts sound system that messes up everything. Really, sort that out and you got VB going. Google is all over it and I can't imagine the Debian Forums not having the solution.

I doubt it's a VB bug. Nobody else noticed and reported it before. I really think you've got a frog in your system. Get some applications to run together, like Youtube, Amarok and the system sounds. Then dump VB with it, configured on the same audio system as Amarok is running at.

I use Debian Sid with Xfce. If there is any problem with VB and Debian, then it's a very, very rare but that only you get. However, if it's a screw up on the user side and broke the audio system (KDE tends to do that), then you need to point fingers at other people than VB.

I've seen countless sound issues like this and they are all from user incompetence and ignorance.

Just read your 'bug' report. Why in blazes are you trying to use the .run file when it's only use is for distro's that are not supported by native packages like rpm and deb. Distro's like Arch, Gentoo, Slackware and such are better suited. If you think that the devs are going to spend time on a bug that does not show when using the package that's made for the system, you really are an idiot.

I'm not an idiot, and stop attacking me. Barbarian.

Oracle VirtualBox package for Debian has another bug: (with VBoxPython)
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/10079

So either way I have broken sound or broken VBoxPython.

Sound is overrated anyway. But you have three options: no python, no sound, build it yourself.
