Cannot open host device (CD-ROM)

Post by Drew5316 »

Can't seem to get the CD Rom working on an Ubuntu 10.04LTS Server running virtualbox 4.1.6. Keep getting the follow errors:
Cannot open host device '/dev/sr0' for readonly access. Check the permissions of that device ('/bin/ls -l /dev/sr0'): Most probably you need to be member of the device group. Make sure that you logout/login after changing the group settings of the current user (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED)

User is a member of the cdrom group. CD-ROM is mounted at /mnt/cd-dvd. Rebooted both virtualbox and host. Nada...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

That worked. I had the user in the vboxusers group, but apparently had not rebooted... Thanks.

Now I have an existing vdmk that I have set up, and loaded the WinXP CD to boot in to a repair mode (to remove an AGP graphics driver) and I can open Remote Desktop Connection, but all I get is a black screen stating, "Press any key to boot from CD....." and yet, despite hitting keys on the 3 different keyboards that may be attached (laptop that is running RDC, USB keyboard attached to the laptop, and a wireless USB keyboard attached to the server), I'm getting no response. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Drew

You seem to be having KB issues with the RDP session.
1) try using vRPD (requires that you have install the Extension Pack on the host)
2) make sure that you have *not* setup any USB filters for the KB or mouse. They are shared features.
3) read chapter 7 Remote virtual machines in your VirtualBox users manual

2) make sure that you have *not* setup any USB filters for the KB or mouse. They are shared features.
3) read chapter 7 Remote virtual machines in your VirtualBox users manual
OK, I'm starting to get lost...
1. Not sure how to do this... If I understand the Users Manual correctly (and I won't feel bad if I don't as it's a bit cryptic for my comprehension skills), Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection is compatible with VirtualBox Remote Display Protocol (VRDP). Is there something else I should be trying? I definitely have the correct version of the Oracle Extensions pack installed:

Code: Select all

> VBoxManage list extpacks
Extension Packs: 1
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Version: 4.1.6
Revision: 74713
Description: USB 2.0 Host Controller, VirtualBox RDP, PXE ROM with E1000 support.
VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP
Usable: true
Why unusable:
2. Oops... I had one of these set up for the wireless keyboard. I removed it.
3. I'm reading -- not completely understanding, but willing to work through it -- and here's where I'm getting caught up:
Even when the extension is installed, the VRDP server is disabled by default. It can easily be enabled on a per-VM basis either in the VirtualBox Manager in the "Display" settings (see the section called “Display settings”) or with VBoxManage:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --vrde on
Simple enough, however, here's what I get:

Code: Select all

> VBoxManage modifyvm "BonesVM" --vrde on
VBoxManage: error: Could not find a registered machine named 'BonesVM'
VBoxManage: error: Details: code VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80bb0001), component VirtualBox, interface IVirtualBox, callee nsISupports
Context: "FindMachine(Bstr(a->argv[0]).raw(), machine.asOutParam())" at line 360 of file VBoxManageModifyVM.cpp
So I go and try to list the registered vms:

Code: Select all

> VBoxManage list vms
...and nada. Nothing comes back, which means to me that no machine is "registered" even though I can see them and edit their preferences, etc... bugger.
Now I feel a little stuck, again.

Looking back i saw that you listed some cryptic user because you thought that was the way to do it with phpvirtualbox. VirtualBox is really fussy about the user. You cannot set it up as one user and run it as another at a whim due to security.

So you're suggesting I add "admin" to the Linux user pool...?

Not at all. Never run VBox as admin/root.
What I am saying is the user that installs, starts VirtualBox & creates guests must be the same user and be in the vboxusers group.
This sets the VBOX_USER_HOME environment (chapter 10.1.3 Global configuration data) in your VirtualBox users manual.

First, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it.

Second, I'm still confused...
Perryg wrote:Not at all. Never run VBox as admin/root.

This sets the VBOX_USER_HOME environment (chapter 10.1.3 Global configuration data) in your VirtualBox users manual.
I'm pretty sure I have the User set up correctly. Here's what I have.
10.1.3 Global configuration data
In addition to the files of the virtual machines, VirtualBox maintains global configuration data.
On Windows, Linux and Solaris, this is in $HOME/.VirtualBox (which makes it hidden on Linux
and Solaris), whereas on a Mac this resides in $HOME/Library/VirtualBox.
VirtualBox creates this configuration directory automatically if necessary. Optionally, you can
supply an alternate configuration directory by setting the VBOX_USER_HOME environment variable.
(Since the global VirtualBox.xml settings file points to all other configuration files, this
allows for switching between several VirtualBox configurations entirely.)
Most importantly, in this directory, VirtualBox stores its global settings file, another XML file
called VirtualBox.xml. This includes global configuration options and the list of registered
virtual machines with pointers to their XML settings files.
So if I'm understanding the manual text and your comments correctly, I should see the .Virtualbox directory under my /home/{user}/ path...? Here's a screenshot of my Webmin File Manager:

Image

If I dig a little deeper, and open (but not edit) the Virtualbox.xml file, I find these configuration variables:

Code: Select all

<MachineRegistry><MachineEntry uuid="{29bffdbc-dec9-46bc-a9e4-b2f7198ae8ab}" src="/home/Drew/VirtualBox VMs/BonesVM/BonesVM.vbox"/>
<MachineEntry uuid="{6bfed474-c4fa-44c4-a314-1b9c3bc470dc}" src="/home/Drew/VirtualBox VMs/xpvm/xpvm.vbox"/>
</MachineRegistry>
Yet, when I try to turn on vrde through the CLI, the UUID for BonesVM does not appear to be "registered":

Code: Select all

> VBoxManage modifyvm {29bffdbc-dec9-46bc-a9e4-b2f7198ae8ab} --vrde on
VBoxManage: error: Could not find a registered machine with UUID {29bffdbc-dec9-46bc-a9e4-b2f7198ae8ab}
VBoxManage: error: Details: code VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80bb0001), component VirtualBox, interface IVirtualBox, callee nsISupports
Context: "FindMachine(Bstr(a->argv[0]).raw(), machine.asOutParam())" at line 360 of file VBoxManageModifyVM.cpp
So I think Vbox is set up under user=Drew and I'm logged on to the host machine as user=Drew, and I seem to be getting conflicting information in the response to CLI commands through VBoxManage compared to what is apparent in my Vbox configuration files. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Drew

One thing I did was make sure the VBOXWEB_USER={known Linux User} in my /etc/default/virtualbox file.
Remember this from your other topic? Like I said you have too many different entries of users. At this point it appears that the phpvirtualbox is mis-configured.

Here's that config file in it's entirety (unchanged):

Code: Select all

VBOXWEB_USER=Drew
I feel like I just got thrown over the phpvirtualbox : virtualbox fence... I'll hit up Ian and see if he has any thoughts.

Well you didn't tell me that you had changed the user, so how was I to tell?

Anyway I would not worry about phpvirtualbox until you can run VirtualBox and start a guest from the CLI if it were me.

I know this is harder for someone just learning but when you add more pieces to the puzzle it becomes complicated.
So at this point as far as VirtualBox is concerned you do not have a registered guest. You can get past this by following the users manual.
Chapter 7.1.3 Step by step: creating a virtual machine on a headless server. It is step by step and really does work.

If however you are certain that VirtualBox is installed and configured properly, and that the vboxweb service is actually running, you can see if the phpvirtualbox people can help you through the configuration. I simply don't use it, so I would be of little help. I tested it sometime ago and it did work but I prefer the command line myself.

So here's where I'm at... Built a new machine. Been tearing my hair out for hours trying to get Samba to work -- separate and unrelated issue, but not helping my psychological state (and Pandora is dishing up a serious dose of "thumbs down" tunes). Took a break from Samba-land to install VBox. Here's what I did:

1. /etc/apt/sources.list added "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lucid contrib non-free"
2. Downloaded Oracle Public Key to /tmp
3. apt-get update
4. apt-get install virtualbox-4.1
5. apt-key add /tmp/oracle_vbox.asc response:OK
6. apt-get install dkms
7. Downloaded VirtualBox 4.1.6 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack to /tmp
8. VBoxManage extpack install /tmp/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.6-74713.vbox-extpack
This is where it starts to fall apart:

Code: Select all

3. apt-get update
4. apt-get install virtualbox-4.1
5. apt-key add /tmp/oracle_vbox.asc response:OK
6. apt-get install dkms
Got the order mixed up. DKMS should have been installed before VirtualBox.

I always install these packages first. (debian based distro)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential linux-headers-generic
Then install VirtualBox. Add my user name to the vboxusers group, then reboot. Works every time.

Note: I do all of the above from the command line. I don't hold stock in helper programs working properly to do these steps.
Just open a terminal or TTY or just type it if you are on a server CLI. It really goes fast and works.

OK, brand new install of only virtualbox-4.1 up and running. Created a VM according to the user manual, and got stuck at:
8. On the client machine, fire up the RDP viewer and try to connect to the server (see chapter
7.1.1, Common third-party RDP viewers, page 95 above for how to use various common
RDP viewers).
You should now be seeing the installation routine of your guest operating system remotely
in the RDP viewer.
Nope. Firing up RDC and going to the hostIP:vrdeport I'm getting an error that it cannot connect. If I do a VBoxManage showvminfo, I get:

Code: Select all

What I don't like is the 0.0.0.0 IP address. Shouldn't this be the IP address of the host?
