Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device

Postby SteelRat » 25. Oct 2011, 08:58

Hi all,
When I first start my virtualbox machine with Windows XP SP3 guest OS the following dialog appears:

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_READ_ERROR).

Result Code:
E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole

and then my device (USB video capture) de-attaches from virtualmachine. If I try to attach it again when system is working - it successfully attaches but works very strange - BSOD appears and other problems...
This dialog appears only when I first running my virtual machine after Ubuntu reboot. If i will close virtualbox and open it again and run the machine, then this message will not appear, but device is still working strange.

I tried to start the machine under root (with sudo) and under my user, but there is no difference...

OS: Ubuntu 11.10
VirtualBox: 4.1.4 from virtualbox.org

Did you install the Extension Pack?
Is your <user name> in the vboxusers group?

Did you reboot the host after you put your name in the group?

Can you try something else like an external memory stick? Does that work?

I have connected my old capture card (Pinnacle 500 USB), and it works.
I go to my friend and tried my video capture device on his computer (Ubuntu 11.04 and VirtualBox 4.1.4) and it works without any problems... :(
I tried to install Ubuntu VirtualBox OSE, and nothing happens.

Sure sounds like the USB2 is not working to me. What is the actual name (complete) of the Extension Pack you installed?

My old capture card needs USB 2.0 and it works without any error, but it displays corrupted image from camera (seeming that it is this ticket https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/242). In VMware Player it works perfectly (and new capture card works perfectly too) but there is high CPU load in VMware Player.

Extension Pack: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack 4.1.4r74291

Hi,
I have the same error for one of my USB devices since ubuntu update from 11.04 to 11.10:

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_READ_ERROR).

Fehlercode:NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Komponente:Console
Interface:IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}

All other USB 2.0 device work properly.

Vbox version: 4.1.6
Vbox extension pack: Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.6-74713

I'm in the same boat.
Host OS: 64-bit Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3 LTS
VirtualBox version 4.1.6r74727 (amd64 architecture)
Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack 4.1.4 revision 74291

This is a new rebuild of the Lucid host.
On the previous Lucid host, I had a WinXP guest running on VirtualBox which could see my iPod.
(I snapped off the SATA attachment on the old root disk drive so I don't have any way of knowing what the old version was.)

Now when I try to attach the iPod using. . .
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
VBoxManage controlvm "elefun og xp" usbattach 9399f0cc-1c6e-4270-be02-72dd3cf85747

. . . I get:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
00:24:03.726 ERROR [COM]: aRC=NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) aIID={1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} aComponent={Console} aText={Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_READ_ERROR)}, preserve=false

(I get the same sort of error when trying to to this using the VirtualBox GUI on the host's console.)
(Also, I have no trouble doing a usbattach to a USB printer. So the USB works for some things but not others.)
(Yes, I'm in vboxusers; yes, I did sudo service vboxdrv setup.)
(Oh, and I updated the VBox guest additions on the XP guest.)

Here's what the device looks like to VBoxManage list usbhost after trying to usbattach:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
UUID:               9399f0cc-1c6e-4270-be02-72dd3cf85747
VendorId:           0x05ac (05AC)
ProductId:          0x1300 (1300)
Revision:           16.1 (1601)
Manufacturer:       Apple
Product:            iPod
SerialNumber:       000A2700106AD027
Address:            sysfs:/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:06.1/usb2/2-3//device:/dev/bus/usb/002/002
Current State:      Held

Any idea what's going on?
What does a current state of "Held" mean?
What's the VERR_READ_ERROR signify?
What's the NS_ERROR_FAILURE signify?
What's that aIID={1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} refer to? It doesn't match the UUID of my iPod.

Is there a known-good version of VirtualBox I could regress to?
Or maybe there's some jiggery pokery in the settings to spoof vbox into accepting the iPod?

Big picture question: Why oh why does vbox have problems with so many specific USB devices?
Seems to me like USB passthrough from host to guest should be dumb and simple.
Srsly, what's there to get so hung up on?

Thanks!

It seems, that you simply don't know where is the problem and don't want to solve it...
We can give all debug logs to developers, so they can solve the problem. But you didn't ask for such resource...
So we will solve the problem never.

@SteelRat,
Did I reference your name in my post? I don't think I did. I told the other poster that with their current configuration there is no way it can succeed.
Why the particular capture card you are using does not work? I have no idea. If you want to proceed with figuring out the issue I suggest you post a ticket at bugtracker. Be sure to provide guest log files (as an attachment).

Why not update the Extension Pack to match the build and see if this helps.

Thanks, Perryg, for the suggestion. But no joy.
I downloaded the latest Extension Pack from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads.
The file I got was Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.6-74713.vbox-extpack.
This does not match the version installed, 4.1.6r74727, which I installed via apt-get using the following sources.list entry:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lucid contrib non-free

Is there somewhere else I should be looking for a more recent version of the Extension Pack?
I couldn't find anything via apt-cache search.

In any event, I installed it with a
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
sudo VBoxManage extpack install --replace Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.6-74713.vbox-extpack

And got the same error. (The iPod's UUID changed in the usbhost listing, but I'm guessing that's not significant.)
