Solved: 4.0.4 Guest reboots randomly

Host: Fedora 14 64 bit
Guest: Windows 7 32 bit

VirtualBox versions that are affected: 4.0-4.0.2 & 4.0-4.0.4, used the appropriate guest additions for each version

No issue with 4.0.4.0.0

Problem: Windows guest will restart randomly or freeze completely. No power save or screensaver options set. 3D/2D and Enable Nested Paging not set.

After further testing the issue seems to relate to the 4.0-4.0.2 and 4.0-4.0.4 guest additions:

Failed Tests:
VirtualBox 4.0-4.0.2 running guest addition 4.0-4.0.2 will freeze and reboot
VirtualBox 4.0-4.0.4 running guest addition 4.0-4.0.4 will freeze and reboot

Successful Tests:
VirtualBox 4.0-4.0.0 running guest addition 4.0-4.0.0 no reboots or freezing
VirtualBox 4.0-4.0.4 running guest addition 4.0-4.0.0 no reboots or freezing

Running guest addition 4.0-4.0.0 works properly.

The test scenario to cause reboot/freeze is using Quest Toad - opening schema browser or session browser then closing either will cause the problem. There are probably other programs that are having the same issue: there is a related post about AutoCad in the Windows Guest Forum with the same issue.

4.0.4 Guest additions crashes AutoCAD for me.
Where can I download Guest additions 4.0.0?
Is it ok to install them along virtualbox 4.0.4?

The method I used for testing:
I have virtualbox install files for 4.0-4.0.0, 4.0-4.0.2 and 4.0-4.0.4

The problem I encountered happened when I upgraded to 4.0-4.0.2 and 4.0-4.0.4 with the same version of guest additions.

I had to revert virtualbox to an older version by installing 4.0-4.0.0 then starting my vm guest - update the guest additions which will install the 4.0-4.0.0 version, then shutdown the vm. Next I installed a newer version - 4.0-4.0.4 of virtualbox - this time I did not update the guest additions when running my vm guest.

It has been stable with my current configuration: virtualbox 4.0-4.0.4 with guest additions 4.0-4.0.0 - no crashing/rebooting of the vm guest.

This is probably not a supported scenario - if you are going to try testing, make sure you have backups of your vm images and configuration before starting.

Hi,

I can confirm this problem with Windows 7 64bit SP1 host. Guest OS (Windows XP SP3) restarts randomly while Toad is being used. Exactly as described in earlier posts.

Bug tracker Ticket 8429 has a fix for the issue.

Currently testing the Guest Addition r702381 and it is working properly.

Hi, anyone have a working link to the latest corrected GuestAdditions ISO ? I suffer from the same problem on a MacOSX host - WinXP guest
