I just read this report about VMWare on Android and was wondering if Oracle has plans for developing a VirtualBox version for that platform.

the vmware stuff is highly misleading - its not virtualisation at all as far as i can see, more like running an overlay in a container.

the chips used in even the highest-end android devices have no hardware vt-x or x86 instruction set, so virtualbox is never going to work.

Thanks for your reply. VMWare calls it "VMware MVP (Mobile Virtualization Platform)". Trying to get information is only possible when calling (I'm not in the States so no go) or giving them personal contact information. So, if it is "real" virtualization or not is out of my scope. I also know that Smart phones are not x86 architecture. My question is, does Oracle plan on developing a virtualization solution for Android (it is based on a Linux kernel, isn't it?), or better, for smart phones in general? A "yes", "no" or a "maybe" from an Oracle representative would suffice to quell the thirst of my curiosity.

I doubt they will move to the hand-held market, unless there is a high demand for it. So far, virtualisation is quite heavy on power consumption. A laptop that would normally run 3 hours without a VM would now run 2 or even 1 hour, depending on the use of the VM (idle vs working). When I run a VM, I notice that the battery drains faster, even if I just create a VPN connection to my work and start a remote desktop session.

Virtualbox only runs on Intel compatible CPU.
Most Android devices are using ARM processors (like the Nvidia Tegra) which are not Intel compatible.

Yes, the claim in the first message is potentially misleading.

There is a version of Android which has been ported to Intel x86. It would presumably be possible (though not sensible) to implement VMWare (or VirtualBox) on an Android-x86 host, however anyone assuming that this would allow them to run Vista on their mobile phone would be... sadly mistaken. As mentioned, most mobile devices seem to use ARM cores, and the ARM instruction set is nothing like Intel x86.

Ubuntu announced that it has enabled its OS to be run directly on Android devices. You therefore do not need a separate VirtualBox virtual machine to run Ubuntu Linux within Android.

ok but I would like to run windows applications on a smartphone, say for example service repair applications or such.

Thats great. Then its possible to start Qemu with x86 and install Windows Vista on a Mobile Phone. And in Vista you can install Qemu with PwerPC and a MacOS inside.
