No Screen Orientation option in Win 7 guest OS

Post by shameless »

I'm running VB on a Macintosh host. Today I bought and installed a Samsung SyncMaster 2243 monitor, which includes the option to pivot 90 degrees into portrait mode.
I got pivoting set up on the Mac end without a hitch.
I also installed the Samsung drivers on my Win 7 virtual machine and got it to recognize the native resolution of the new monitor. However, I can't get the display to pivot in the Windows 7 VM. Online tutorials show a Screen Orientation option in the Win 7 Screen Resolution dialog box, but mine doesn't show this.
There are a few potential culprits here that don't seem easy to isolate, so I thought I'd start by checking if other folks have this working. I've searched the forums and can't find much discussion about it, so that makes me suspect VB less.
The only other idea I've come up with is that this option requires a DVI connection rather than the VGA that I'm using? (The monitor has both DVI & VGA out.) I haven't found this documented either.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I experience the same problem under WinXP (guest). However, I don't believe the underlying operating system has much to do with it. I believe it's a missing feature of the standard virtual box graphics driver (which of course is somewhat specific to the OS). Last year, with an older version (or maybe with VMWare) it worked nicely, but neither in Virtual Box 4.1.6 nor in 4.1.8 I arrived to run my vm in portrait mode, which is a great advantage when dealing with the annual tax declaration. The display driver didn't even offer a resolution fitting the capabilities of my monitor.
System configuration:
Monitor: LG 24", native resolution 1920*1080, pivot function
Host OS: Unbuntu Linux 11.10
Guest OS: Win XP
VM: Oracle virtual box 4.1.8
What's the preferred option? Switch back to VMware? Try out wine? Try out an older release of virtualbox? Wait for next release with hopefully a more powerful display driver?

Rotate the monitor output to portrait mode using your Host OS (Ubuntu) drivers, if that is possible, then the guest OS (Win XP) should also display portrait.
(At least it works that way for a Ubuntu or Windows guest on my Windows host.)

Best to make sure you have the Guest Additions installed on the guest XP.

Thank you for your advice; it lead me to searching somewhere else. Currently, I cannot reproduce the error, and after pressing "host-A" even the correct resolution was set. So, I'm happy again; case resolved. :)
