Re: USB filters greyed out
I am running opensuse 11.1 and vbox 3.2.2r56127. I have read all the post on the usb flash being grayed out and the user manual and I am still not able to select the usb flash stick to make it available to the guest system, which is windows xp.
I checked my username under user and groups and the account is a member of the "vboxusers" and "root" groups. I followed the trouble shooting steps to make user the in /etc/fstab i have the following line at the very bottom and still no luck.
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=115,devmod=664 0 0
I also change the above statement to the following and no luck.
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=115,devmod=666 0 0
Below is the kit that was pulled and installed
VirtualBox-3.1-3.1.2_56127_openSUSE111-1.i586.rpm
Any help would welcome.
Thanks

If your profile is right then you are in the wrong forum. This is for Linux Hosts.
Windows does not have the vboxusers group
Plus if you have Windows you more than likely have the PUEL version unless you compiled it yourself.

I have the same problem. I'm running UBUNTU 8.04 and VirtualBOx 3.1.2
I went into admin ..... manage groups, but there is no group named VirtualBox
Any suggestions as how to proceed?

Re: USB filters greyed out
Thanks for that reply.
I'm trying to use the "Teensy" USB development board which connects via USB and lets one download programs from the host computer into the Teensy. I wanted to put all the development software into a VirtualBox to keep it all isolated.
In 'fooling around' I found that if I clicked on "Devices ... USB devices" I see an "Unknown Device". If I click on that, the USB seems to work fine and I can download programs from my laptop into the Teensy.
So, I'm off and running ..... without understanding

Re: USB filters greyed out
Ahah - I found MY problem. One has to set the 'virtualbox' users group on the HOST machine, not on the VirtualBox machine. Now things appear to be working for me.
I PRESUME I am running the PUEL version and not the OSE version (since USB is working). BUT, how do I tell from info in the VirtualBox system which version I am running. The "Help ... about" gives the version as 3.1.2 r56127; I see nothing that indicates whether or not it is the PUEL version.
Thanks

Re: USB filters greyed out
@kellykare,
I could have sworn that your profile said OSE in it but I guess that was my mistake. After doing all that you have done it should work.
You can send this:
host terminal/command windows VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.
I will look it over and if I do not see an error then you probably should post a ticket in the bugtracker.
Also one final thing you can try this from the troubleshooting section of the VBox Users Manual
If you have USB working then you surely have the PUEL version and should change your profile to reflect this.

@jdoutt,The various distributions are very creative from which script the usbfs filesystem is mounted. Sometimes the command is hidden in unexpected places. For SuSE 10.0 the mount command is part of the udev configuration file /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules. As this distribution has no user group called usb, you may e.g. use the vboxusers group which was created by the VirtualBox installer. Since group numbers are allocated dynamically, the following example uses 85 as a placeholder. Modify the line containing
DEVPATH="/module/usbcore", ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/mount -t usbfs usbfs /proc/bus/usb"
and add the necessary options (make sure that everything is in a single line):
DEVPATH="/module/usbcore", ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/mount -t usbfs usbfs /proc/bus/usb -o devgid=85,devmode=664"

Thanks - I changed my profile to "PUEL"
I should mention that I did nothing except add myself to the virtualbox group -
For me, the 14 Jan 09:32 post would have been perfect had it only mentioned to use "system .... administration ..." on the HOST computer
.
Here's the output when I typed the following into a terminal window on the host (See second listing below for output after attaching the USB device ( Devices ... USB devices)
$ VBoxManage showvminfo Teensy-Arduino-02
MOD Edit: Please use code blocks for long/log messages

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner and the very long post. I ran the VBoxManager command but the command did not
find the vmachine name. I tried it many ways but no luck. Now my windows.vdi is not located in the
path under the /home folder. My /home/bkelly/documents is a physical path with a link to "My Documents:
that is located on a seprate physical disk. I did this so when I up grade or do new installs I will not
lose my personal stuff. Not sure if this has anything to do with the issue, but just an fyi.

Re: USB filters greyed out
For OpenSUSE 11.1 you can edit the file /etc/udev/rules.d/10-vboxdrv.rules to look like this:
Only thing to add is a ":" in the last instance of "MODE=0664"!
Then run the following command as root:
Should give you working USB.
Code: Select all
KERNEL=="vboxdrv", NAME="vboxdrv", OWNER="root", GROUP="root", MODE="0600"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", GROUP="vboxusers", MODE="0664"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", GROUP="vboxusers", MODE=:"0664"
Then run the following command as root:
Code: Select all
udevadm trigger

I made the recommend changes and ran the command and the usb stick was still grayed out. I also rebooted, then same. Below is how the 10-vboxdrv.rules file appears after the change.
Linux1:/etc/udev/rules.d # cat 10-vboxdrv.rules
KERNEL=="vboxdrv", NAME="vboxdrv", OWNER="root", GROUP="root", MODE="0600"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", GROUP="vboxusers", MODE="0664"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", GROUP="vboxusers", MODE=:"0664"
Linux1:/etc/udev/rules.d #
I also have the update to the fstab file that was recommended in the tech doc, last line in fstab. should that line remain?
Linux1:/etc # cat fstab
