ive got my virtual machines to use a mac address of DEADBEEF0000. when i load vbox 1.5.2 it forced a delete of my virtual machine and after that refused to create any more.
its a buggy piece of crap -- dont download it.
virtualbox 1.5.2 destroys virtual machines! DONT DOWNLOAD!

That sounds highly unlikely. Without more information there's not much I can say.
I've just verified it and there's a stupid bug in the mac address verifier that you caught by using that address. Edit your machine configuration file to change the mac address into e.g. 'D8ADBEEF0000'.
Nevertheless it didn't destroy my virtual machines; it made the one with the 'invalid' mac address inaccessible. Both on Windows and Linux hosts.
