Ipod touch, Iphone takes forever to sync

Ok some background . I am trying to get my wife to convert fully to Linux. Her only mission critical application is Itunes. She loves the darn thing. For the life of me, I can't get it to work properly for her.

She has an unlocked 2g Iphone and and a 1g Itouch. The box is running Intrepid. Latest version of VirtualBox, guest additions installed. XP guest. Only things installed on the guest are XP and Itunes. I am allocating 2gigs of memory to XP under VB.

The symptoms are that when syncing it runs extremely slowly. Its hangs forever at "verifying Ipod" screen. Sometimes it never completes at all.Takes forever to update apps too.

I thought it might have something to do with her computer, which was a few generations old. So I gave her MY computer, which is a Core 2 Duo 2.6ghz with 4gigs of ram. It runs marginally faster on my computers then hers. But just to give you some real figures, it took 5 hours to sync her itouch. 5 hours...really!

Granted she has a 32gb itouch but still. I know it only takes a few minutes to update on her old machine in a native XP environment. I just don't know what to do to fix this. I really don't want to have to reinstall XP but I am afraid I am going to have to if I can't resolve this.

The only clue I have to why it does this is that sometimes I can get it to bump out of its forever updating cycle by increasing the priority of the Itunes.exe using the device manager but this can cause instability.

Any ideas....ANY?

ADD: for those who are successfully syncing their Iphone and Itouch devices. How long is it taking you to sync?

I have been scouring the internet. Seems like its kinda hit and miss. Some people report success. Others have problems.

My personal Iphone syncs fine but then again I keep my Iphone pretty slim whereas my wife downloads almost everything to the darn device. Again this is a problem with hers. I almost wonder if its a DRM thing since almost all my music is MP3 and all of hers are mostly DRM protected Apple format.

I would really like to hear some success stories. I am open to all ideas.

I'm experiencing similar behavior to your. Currently, I am going on well over 2 hours to sync a 16 GB ipod touch (2nd gen). It seemed to update the new apps that I downloaded recently, but it has hung in the "Syncing ipod-touch" mode. I cannot do ANYTHING in itunes, although the start menu still responds.

Last time I synced, I walked away from the laptop after it had been going for over 2 hours and was stuck in the same place. I had to unplug the laptop, and by the time I got back the laptop's battery had been drained. The sync seemed to have completed before the battery dies, although I'm starting to suspect that actually the sync completes quickly, but does not exit quickly.

I'm becoming tempted to use the "slide to cancel" option to quit the sync at this point and see if it really did finish. All I care is that it has transferred the new podcasts.

One thing that I have noticed is that if you bump the priority of itunes.exe file , that it sometimes gets it to finish. It doesn't always work.

I have a similar issue. I'm on a 2nd Gen 16gb iPod touch. My host is Ubuntu Jaunty and the guest is Windows XP. I don't want to boot Windows just to sync so I resorted to Virtualbox. However, it seems that it's slower in vbox than in my Windows 7 install. iTunes is a hell of a resource hog in any of my platforms, though.

It's been about an hour and a half but my syncing isn't done yet. I have synced 806 out of 1148 songs. I think, it took a little more time because it did backup first, iTunes was converting file formats, I activated the genius playlist, etc; but it still is taking too long.

I read here http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/sho ... hp?t=83155 that syncing really takes a while but I do not know how it compares to Windows in vbox. How minutes exactly does it take her? How is it compared to the time it takes on vbox?

I've had better success with vbox3.0 beta, but it is still sloooooowwww!!!

I upgraded to AMD64 on my wifes computer and that seemed to help a little. Still the resource manager rarely shows less than 100% CPU capacity while syncing. Time for her to sync 15-45 minutes.

That's good! Which amd64 are you talking about, Ubuntu? I'm on Jaunty 64.

I'm also on 3.0 beta and it's still faster in Windows 7.

Sorry I guess I should have mentioned, I am 9.04 Jaunty. I am no where near the speed at which it syncs natively in XP. I don't know about Windows 7

Changing display resolution settings to 800x600 then syncing works. I am then able to change back to my original resolution and continue living my life.

Once I plugged in my Touch 1st Gen, and hit the sync button, immediately minimize Itunes. Runs extremely fast that way, if I leave Itunes "unminimized" it will either never complete or take 12 or more hours if it does.

I like this better as I can do something else in Windows while Itunes is doing it's thing minimized.

So it seems that everybody has his own trick to get it faster. Mine is to enable the screensaver. This does it for me. I also noticed that when the screensaver is not running the usb icon changes between activity and inactivity all the time whereas with screensaver usb is constantly active.
