External hard drive as a VM

Post by frank99 »

Anyone been able to set up an external hard drive as a vm using VBox?

I have PCLinuxOS as host and WinXP as a guest (because I like "Word Slinger" and cannot fine a Linux equivalent), but would like to be able to access an external USB hard drive from within PCLinux. I need this external drive to do some video editing (Kdenlive seems to only like .avi formats - not .mpg). At present I have to physically change drives. I am using an Acer laptop, and I am aware that it is a slow process on a laptop.- - but hey, when you are retired you have quite a bit of spare time.

Any suggestions appreciated.

My mistake. I should have said that I would like to be able to boot the external hard drive, and not just use it as a shared folder.
I may be wrong but to do that I would have thought I would need to actually create a VM of the external drive and I cannot find any info on doing that.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Please look in The User Doc, there are some chapters (9.8, 9.9) about VM on a real hd.
