shared clipboard?

I run fedora 10 as my host ( x64 ) and am running xp pro as my guest. I for some reason cannot set up a shared clipboard. I find this a rather important tool to have. Please help.
Several questions:
- what version of VB?
- do you have the XP guest additions installed (needed for shared clipboard)
- does it work if you copy from FC10 to XP, or from XP to FC10, or never works?
I have also noticed that shared clipboard for some reason doesn't always work. (Ubuntu 8.10-64bit host, various guests.) I don't know why yet, haven't noticed the pattern.
