Best reboot method after update, upgrades on both VB and host

Post by ozstar »

Hi,

After updating and upgrading both VB and host on Linux Ubuntu 20.04 what is the best method to reboot?

Close the VB then reboot the host or.. ?

Thanks

Any answer to this please?

Updated both the host and the VB 7.02 inside Linux 20.04 but the host tells me I have to restart to begin to use the updated files.

To close the VB first then restart the host linux seems the best way, but is it?

I would like the VB to restart again automatically once I reboot the host.

If "close the VB" means to shut down running VMs before rebooting for a Virtualbox update, then, yes, please shut down the VMs first. Virtualbox may save-state VMs that are running when the host reboots, and save-stated VMs very often do not survive a Virtualbox version change.

In fact, you should shut down all VMs before starting the update. Changing a program while the program is running can have negative consequences.

This has to be configured manually, whether through Virtualbox's Autostart feature https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#autostart or a 3rd-party tool.
