How to solve random 100% CPU forcing the guest to be shut down?

Post by Paddy Landau »

I've seen others mention this, but I can't find it now.

With VirtualBox 7.0.2 (it also happened on the previous 7 point-release), the virtual machine will randomly hit 100% and stay there.

I have to force the guest to close (File > Close, or Host+Q), restore to the latest snapshot, and try again. Something as simple as updating Windows 11 can take multiple restarts before it manages to get through to the end.

I have got into the habit of taking a snapshot every few minutes (really!), because it happens so often.

As recommended elsewhere, I've turned off 3D acceleration in the VB settings, and the transparency effects in Windows 11. But that hasn't helped.

Host: Linux Ubuntu 22.04, 16 Gb RAM

Guest: Windows 11, fairly fresh installation with the standard included apps, no extra apps installed. Guest Extensions installed. Allocated 5 Gb RAM, 6 CPUs, 256 Mb video memory. Graphics controller VBoxSVGA. Screenshot summary attached.

How can I fix this problem, please?

Thank you
