Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
Good morning,
I am on a Ubuntu 22.04 Host, Windows 11 VM, Virtualbox 7.0
I am loving 7.0! The unattended install options work well and I am super excited to see the direction this all goes.
My issue is that after a reboot once I install guest additions (the latest for Virtualbox 7) my Windows 11 boots up and then freezes. I figure since 7 is so new stuff like this will happen but I would love to be able to troubleshoot more and maybe help out with the issue, but I am not sure where to begin. I was wondering where I should be checking to see what is happening and why it's freezing. Or maybe it's just a known issue being worked on.
Thank you to whoever takes the time to read this

Re: Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
Please provide a VM log file. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Same configuration and same symptoms here. Seems to run stable until the guest additions are installed.
I have attached a logfile, there is a message about the guest being unresponsive at 00:13:59.659643.
Would installing older guest additions actually work?

Re: Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
@jpelli: you are cutting RAM use very close to the bone.
Another odd thing I'm seeing is that the host has ~11GB available. I'd bet that this is actually a 16GB PC, but 4GB is being swallowed for motherboard graphics. Not necessarily significant, but it tells me that your host may not have top tier graphics capabilities - or drivers.
I also see that you're trying to nudge towards fullhd graphics, but without enabling 3D acceleration.
4.4GB available, 4.13GB allocated, is too close for comfort. I suggest you free up more host RAM, or assign less of it to the VM.00:00:01.278254 Host RAM: 11713MB (11.4GB) total, 4562MB (4.4GB) available
...
00:00:01.445674 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000100000000 (4 294 967 296, 4.0 GiB)

Re: Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
Thanks for having a look.
It is actually a T470 with 12 GB RAM. Second hand, no idea how the 12GB came about.
Not sure about your memory observation, the host reports still one GB free, and works fine. And 4GB should do for Windows 11, shouldn't it? At least without guest additions the Windows 11 guest worked for the whole day (not doing much with it though).
But your other observation seems to have an impact: I did enable the 3D acceleration now, which also allows me to assign 256MB of video memory instead of 128.
After that I installed the guest additions again - and it is still working up to here. Maybe this was the decisive twist.
If I crash again I'll upload another log with the changed configuration. Otherwise a big "thank you"!

Similar here - but I get an abort when I try to install the 7.0 guest additions. I can boot after this but get the same issue during install again. I have a 32GB HP laptop host running Ubuntu 22.04 and the W11 guest has 8GB allocated.
Re: Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
Same issue here. I have a 64Gb Fedora host with 32Gb given to the guest. But whenever I install the 7.0 version of Vbox Addition, Windows guest froze. Had to reset the guest and then install the old VBox addition version 6.1.40 and it the guest is behaving now.Antonovichie wrote:Similar here - but I get an abort when I try to install the 7.0 guest additions. Another update: It was said in another thread if you upgrade the guest addition from 6.1.40 to 7.0, then it works. upgrading the GA from 6.1.38 straight to 7.0 will cause the guest freeze. Well oncw I upgraded the GA for 7.0, Windows 11 seemed to be fine, until I opened Edge browser. So I ended up uninstall the GA 7.0, restart and install GA 6.1.40 again. Will not use GA for 7.0 again.

Re: Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
FWIW, the 153872 test release+GA does not exhibit this behavior. Ubuntu 20.04.1, kernel 5.15.0 on host.
I have also noticed the 2nd GA install from 7.0.0 usually does succeed, if the 1st attempt has not destroyed Win11.

Yeah same experience here, Ubuntu 22.04, Kernel 5.15.0-50-generic, Windows 11 guest lockup with CPU spinning at 100%.
Problem seems to be solved by downgrading guest additions to 6.1.40 (iso is available from download dot virtualbox dot com slash 6.1.40)

Same problem. My confs:
Host: Arch Linux 6.0.7-arch1-1 (64-bit), 16Gb Ram
Guest: Windows 11: 6 Gb Ram
I've fixed it following theses steps
1. Run VM in safe mode, uninstall GA 7.0.2
2. Remove the old Extension Pack (there was an error mark [!] in ACTIVE field) and then install the up to date one
3. downgrade the GA iso to the previous version
sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/virtualbox-guest-iso-6.X.Y-any.pkg.tar.zst
4. Run VM and install the GA

I am seeing the same issue - Host is Win11, VirtualBox 7.0.2, installed Win11, installed the 7 guest additions, and the OS locks up a very short time after booting.

Same issue here. Host is Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS. Virtualbox 7.0.2. Guest is Windows 11 22H2. Locks up randomly after a few minutes of use.
Re: Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
I encountered the same issue. The only way to have the VM running again is to disable the Virtual Box Graphics Adapter (WDDM) on the guest. You need to boot the guest while holding the F8 key and then open an emergency command prompt. Then launch regedit.exe and launch the guest's SYSTEM registry hive located in C:\Windows\System32\Config.
Finally browse to the following key:
CurrentControlSet\Services\VBoxWddm
And set the Start value to 4 (SERVICE_DISABLED_START).
You will finally have a running Windows 11 guest but with a low resolution. Not perfect but you can use the guest and wait for an update of Virtual Box Graphics Adapter (WDDM).

Same for me on a MAc host
Re: Guest additions always locks up the Windows 11 VM
I was facing the same issue. I just enabled the 3D virtualization, and so far it is working fine.
