switch desktops from guest in full-screen mode **solution**

I run Ubuntu 8.04 and typically have 8 virtual desktops available.
I run a W2K guest in one desktop and I like to have use it in full
screen mode. However, it's a bit of a pain to have to exit full-screen
mode to gain access to the Gnome workspace switcher, simply in
order to switch to a different desktop.

Is there a simple way to configure a keystroke combination that
full-screen mode won't capture, which would allow me to switch
directly to another desktop?
I appreciate this is probably more of a Gnome question that a VB one

Configure a hotkey for the Host to switch to a different virtual desktop. Then in the Guest while in fullscreen, hit the HOST key once, then the hotkey set for the Host. Voilá, you are outside the Guest on another virtual desktop.

To put a bit of meat on Sasquatch's suggestion, here's what I did.

On the host:
On the panel, go to System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts
Scroll down to "Switch to workspace 1" (in the Window Management
sub-menu)
Click on this line
the whole line should now be highlighted, with the Shortcut column
changing from "Disabled" to "New accelerator".
Press the hotkey button you want to use to move you from whichever
workspace you're in to workspace #1. I chose the Pause/Break key

Close the keyboard shortcuts window.
Now anytime I press Pause/Break I get transferred immediately to
workspace #1. Even when I'm in a full-screen windows 2000 guest.
To get back to W2K, just click on the workspace it occupies.

same trick for windows host, linux guest?

I have the opposite problem. The host is Windows Vista, and I spend most of the time in a full-screen linux guest. Is there a one-key sequence that will minimize the guest into the Windows taskbar? currently I first exit full-screen, then minimize the machine's window with the minimize icon in the title bar.

To get back, I click on the task-bar icon to restore the window, but I need another keystroke to get back into fullscreen mode.

Hit the Host key, then Hold the Windows key and hit 'm'. Now all open windows will minimize to the task bar.
