Ubuntu22.04 - cant see SharedFolders

Post by Idar »

I've new-installed ubuntu22.04 and installed WM from default repository, plus I installed guest additions as recommended. win10Pro is the guest. Setting up Shared Folders doesn't show in windows. Colleagues running debian seem to get it to work without further ado. I attach the log and a screen shot. Any suggestions?

You don't say where you are looking.

With a modern guest like Win10 it's usually quite easy. Inside the Win10 guest you need to open an explorer window and open the Network>VBOXSVR branch. Right click on \\VBOXSVR\TMP and choose "Pin to Quick access". Now you can click on the click access link any time you want to view that folder.

NOTE. First however you need to install the Guest Additions. See chapter 4. You are trying to use a GAs feature without first having installed the GAs.

I'll add one point:

You probably used "Insert Guest Additions CD Image" menu command. This command ... wait for it ... inserts the Guest Additions CD image. :D It sticks the "CD" in the VM's CD drive. It doesn't start the installer. That's up to the VM's OS or the VM's human to do. Most OS's don't autorun CD exe's anymore, so you'll have to do it manually.

Go to the VM's CD drive and open it, then start the installer.

The Win10 installer ISO is still in the drive, which IMO makes it unlikely that any attempt was made to install the GAs. I suspect the OP has confused the GAs with the extension pack, which is installed: but at this point I notice another problem, that it's the wrong extension pack (EP is for 6.1.36, host software is the Ubuntu 6.1.34 VBox fork).

I saw that too, Mpack, but fth0 showed me a way to tell when the VM booted from CD, whether it likely continued booting from CD or went over to the hard drive.

In the log statistics, look for these lines:
00:15:36.936573 /Public/Storage/AHCI0/Port0/BytesRead 16933577216 bytes
00:15:36.936575 /Public/Storage/AHCI0/Port0/BytesWritten 9346748416 bytes
00:15:36.936596 /Public/Storage/AHCI0/Port1/BytesRead 544768 bytes
From the beginning configuration settings in the log, the hard drive is port 0 and CD is port 1. Looks like the VM read half a Meg from the CD then went to town on the hard drive. I deduce that this was a "Press any key to boot from CD" that timed out. I might be wrong, though.

Idar, you'll need to either roll up Virtualbox to 6.1.36 or the Extension Pack back to 6.1.34: VB & EP versions must match. Get the Guest Additions installed. And your VM may benefit from 2 processors: Windows 10 loves 2 processors but is slow with only 1

Besides, your picture shows the Extension Pack, not the Guest Additions. And the version of EP is still mismatched.

I guess the easiest would be to go back to EP 6.1.34. I guess it is possible to find on the Internet.

Tried to install 6.1.34 - EP (after removing the 6.1.36), but still the same problem. (I restarted the WM before I re-tried).

Good EP matches now.

There is a 6.1.32-dfsg-1build1 500 involved when I check the package in ubuntu22.04, can this be a problem?

No, the problem is that you have not read chapter 4 of the user manual and so you are still confusing two entirely unrelated features: extension pack vs Guest Additions.

Also note that the "VirtualBox" installed by the Ubuntu repo is not actually VirtualBox, it's their own build from the open sources. We only discuss official builds here. You can find the official build by clicking the "Get VirtualBox" icon at the bottom of this page.

I've no idea what that is. The Guest Additions comes on an ISO bundled with official Virtualbox. But wait, you're using the Ubuntu fork of Virtualbox. They don't bundle the GAs ISO.....

OK, download this:

https://download.virtualbox.org/virtual ... 6.1.34.iso

In the VM's settings, under Storage, click the Optical drive, then Choose Disk Image. Browse to and select the GAs ISO downloaded. In the VM,

Yes, this works! So the problem is: 1) make sure to use the same versions (6.1.34...) on extension pack and virtualbox, 2) in case of ubuntu, you have to do an extra download of the GA-for win10 and hock it onto the optical drive in the WM-menu (then win10 can see it from "inside" and you can install it). I guess I got lost in Ch4 - installation, but thanks to you (and my windows knowledgeable wife) I got it right. If I knew how to do it, I'd make a youtube video of just this thing....
