Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
Hello,
Yesterday I could running Win10 VM without any issue. I upgraded my Linux kernel from 5.15.0.41.44 to 5.18.13
because of personal issues on my hiDPI screen, whatever: after the update, now, I can´t launch my Win10 VM.
The VM is starting, then VirtualBox is stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine ... (2/2)" with a progression bar at 20%.
Also the program don´t respond, I need to close it by killing the process.
Help ?

Upgrade to (genuine) VirtualBox 6.1.36. You are currently running the unsupported Ubuntu build of 6.1.34.

Re: Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
I've seen that before in logs from Linux hosts, I don't think it's a fatal error, at worst it would result in unexpected keyboard maps.
This looks like a conflict of come kind, e.g. with KVM, but we will await those with more Linux knowledge than me.
One thing that puzzles me is the Linux version, the log says "OS Version: #202207220940 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Jul 22 09:44:12 UTC 2022", which doesn't look like standard distro to me. A special build of a kernel? It certainly looks like a very new kernel, not exactly LTS.

Re: Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
Nop, I have a QWERTY keyboard configured with a genuine "US intl. with dead keys" Ubuntu 22.04 config.
Is this simple thing can block the program ? Seems hard to believe...

Yes I have this way in mind but don't have enough skills on KVM.mpack wrote:I've seen that before in logs from Linux hosts, I don't think it's a fatal error, at worst it would result in unexpected keyboard maps.

Re: Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
Update:
I remind that kernel 5.18.13 is the current one and virtual box don´t works.
I started Linux from kernel 5.15 and everything is working perfectly.
Then I started Linux from kernel 5.18.14, same issue than in the topic of this post.
GOOD NEWS: kernel 5.17 generation is ok for virtualbox 6.1.36 (it is the highest kernel gen where VBox can run, from my experience...)
I conclude that the last virtualbox version is not ready for the 5.18 kernel generation... anyone have an opinion to share ?
Maybe there is a special config to run it...

Re: Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
The changelog for VirtualBox 6.1.36 states:
You'll probably need to watch for the availability of new VirtualBox Test Builds at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds , or wait for the next version update.
Please Note the words "initial support".VirtualBox 6.1.36 (released July 19 2022)
This is a maintenance release. The following items were fixed and/or added:
Linux Host and Guest drivers: Introduced initial support for kernels 5.18, 5.19 and RHEL 9.1 (bugs #20914, #20941)
You'll probably need to watch for the availability of new VirtualBox Test Builds at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds , or wait for the next version update.

Re: Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
The Windows10-2022-07-27-10-17-27.log file is missing typical log messages very early, for example the "Guest OS type" log message.
Please reproduce the issue and provide a zip file with the contents of ~/.config/VirtualBox/.

Re: Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
The issue is most definitely NOT fixed, and just saying that without providing any details isn't very helpful. I'm still having the same problem.
As stated, it happens only on 5.18.x kernels, not on 5.17.x Latest virtualbox, latest tools. Tested with and without them, it just never starts the VM if I started with a 5.18.x kernel. I think this has been an ongoing unfixed issue since June.

Re: Stuck on "Starting Virtual Machine 20%"
I don't know about any current problem regarding VirtualBox 6.1.36 and Linux kernel 5.18. If you're having problems and like them to be addressed, create your own thread and provide the necessary information.
