Windows 10 guest doesn't start on Linux Host

Post by Phred-deTerroir »

Windows 10 under VirtualBox doesn't start, but displays a message that there is trouble and offering automatic repair. When automatic repair happens, the same message is displayed, till after some repetition, a new message appears offering to troubleshoot. Then I get a choice whether to reinstall Windows 10, preserving my personal files but removing all programs+apps not present in the original system (which I don't want because many are expensive and may need to be repurchased) or "Advanced options".

I am very much a newby, since I use Windows about once a year, to do my taxes. Can anyone advise me what to do?

Host System is:
Operating System: Fedora Linux 35
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.91.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.17.12-200.fc35.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 4600

VirtualBox is:
VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 6.1.34_rpmfusion r150636

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Thanks for a very quick reply.

I have started VirtualBox from the state it was left in after quitting my last attempt to start it. VirtualBox failed, attempted a repair (I was not able to stop it at this point.) then went into Advanced repair mode from which I was able to quit (just as I did the last run). A zipfile of the log is attached.

The attachment to the previous post didn't make it (bad file name), so I am reposting it.

00:00:01.118204 VirtualBox VM 6.1.34_rpmfusion r150636 linux.amd64 (Apr 25 2022 00:00:00) release log
That is not VirtualBox, it's a third party build. By rights you need to get support from whomever built this from the VirtualBox open sources.
00:00:01.134701 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 6.1.32 r149290; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)
The extension pack version must match the host software version, i.e. your extpack should be 6.1.34.
00:00:01.237996 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000004 (4)
Your host can't afford to lose the use of 4 cores, that being all it has. Reduce to 2 cores.

That all said, according to the log the guest did start, and got to the Win10 desktop having loaded the Guest Additions (6.1.32, it's worthwhile to update these too). The hypervisor API did report a guest crash:

Thanks for your help.

I installed a genuine Oracle version of VBox on Fedora-35 which produced a similar failure, then upgraded to Fedora-36 and ran Oracle's VirtualBox-6.1-6.1.34_150636_fedora36-2.x86_64 with extension pack Desktop/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.1.34.vbox-extpack . Always a similar failure. A zip file of the latest log is attached.

What do you suggest? I could try resetting the system; I suspect this would result in the loss of all my HR Block at Home tax software, which I would prefer not to have happen, since the various versions are expensive, and probably most of them can't be re-installed, but this would be less bad than losing access to my old tax files. (I use Windows only for preparing my taxes, starting it about once every 6 months, so the system is pretty close to plain vanilla.)

The guest OS template needs to be changed to Windows 10. A Windows 7 template normally doesn't work for Windows 10.

I should have mentioned before that, according to the log, the guest OS does in fact start. It gets as far as loading the Guest Additions which means it got a long way in.

There is no clear error after that, but I do see the VM being reset soon after 3D acceleration is initialized, so I would suggest disabling 3D acceleration as a test, if you still have a problem after choosing the correct OS template. If disabling 3D causes the VM to work then it indicates a likely problem with host OpenGL drivers, perhaps look for an updated version. You can do a similar test with audio.

If you have backups of the VM folders then there should be little danger of losing your tax files. There are lots of things to try, e.g. moving the VM to a different host, or mounting the disk in another VM and copying off the important files.

One final reminder: please reduce the CPU allocation to 2 cores. You have a 4 core host, so it makes no sense to allocate 4 cores to one side of the balance. Having the VM monopolize the CPU can lead to conflicts with the host.

The actual problem is that VirtualBox 6.1.34 does not support Linux kernel 5.17.12+ on the host and will produce random crashes in the guest (pun intended ;)). See 20914 and Windows 10 Guest on Linux host dies seconds after boot for details.

The VirtualBox test builds 6.1.35r151864 (and newer) are supposed to support Linux kernels 5.18, 5.17.12+, 5.15.44+, 5.10.119+ and more on the host and in the guest. Please report back if it solves the problem.

Hi,

suffering the problems above described on Fedora 36, I downloaded and tested :VirtualBox-6.1.35-151866-Linux_amd64

Windows 10 is back running again, and Windows 11 installation now seems to be running also ( taking ages to complete :) ).

Nevertheless the performance seems terrible, can this be due to the fact this is development version ?

Thank you for the progress on the situation !!

Generally speaking, I wouldn't expect this, because the VirtualBox 6.1.35 test builds are based on the VirtualBox 6.1.34 release builds, and they will eventually lead to the VirtualBox 6.1.36 release.

If you want to discuss/analyze the performance issue, please create a new forum topic with a (zipped) VBox.log file and a detailed explanation of your observations.

The OS seems to be running now, but the "Guest Adition installation is failling":

@YinYang: please start your own topic, provide a detailed description of your problem and include a zipped VM log. Note, the file you provided above is not the zipped VBox.log that fth0 asked for.

How to provide a log: Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip to the first post in your new topic.
