Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
Hi there,
I've been using a VM with Windows 11 x64 on Fedora 35 for months without any issues.
It was running using VirtualBox VM 6.1.97 r150113
The other day, I upgraded to Fedora 36 and as soon as I started the Virtual Machine, I've got a Guru Meditation Error.
In the meantime, a new version has come out, so I updated virtualbox from VirtualBox VM 6.1.97 r150113 to VirtualBox VM 6.1.97 r150532 and I updated the extensions as well, but now all I get is a blue screen with "CRITICAL PROCESS DIED"
Logs in attachment going from 3 attempts with 6.1.97 r150113 to the last one, log4, which shows my attempt with 6.1.97 r150532.
Log1: VirtualBox VM 6.1.97 r150113
Log2: VirtualBox VM 6.1.97 r150113 Log3: VirtualBox VM 6.1.97 r150113
Log4: VirtualBox VM 6.1.97 r150532 Thank you in advance,
Frank

Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
I don't know enough about how to troubleshoot this, but there are a couple things I'd try. The VMs seem to be BSODing inside the VM, not crashing on the host. So perhaps Virtualbox itself is OK (*) and something isn't right in the VM OS. The VM has Guest Additions installed: perhaps try running without GAs, to see if the VM OS stabilizes. Also try the separate GAs download, per the message on the test builds page.
* I do note that this problem happened after upgrading the Fedora host to version 36. I note that the 6.1.34 has a separate Fedora 36 download, but the test builds do not. 36 is less than a month old, maybe the test builds aren't compatible with 36 yet?
Also could be a test build bug, the 6.1.97's are the bleeding edge builds. Only thing is, I'd wager that you're using them to run Windows 11 without the incompatible-computer hacks, so I'm not certain you could try 6.1.34 or .35 successfully. Could be you'll have to restore to your Fedora 35 host disk image.

Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
VirtualBox supports Fedora 36 only since ~2 weeks, in the official VirtualBox 6.1.34 release which was rebuilt then. The VirtualBox development snapshots 6.1.97r150532 are definitely older, and I'm not sure about the state of the VirtualBox test builds 6.1.35r151573.scottgus1 wrote:I note that the 6.1.34 has a separate Fedora 36 download, but the test builds do not. 36 is less than a month old, maybe the test builds aren't compatible with 36 yet?

Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
I always install the newest Guest Additions along with the new version of Virtualbox. The problem here, though, is that since it crashes, I can't update them inside the guest OS.scottgus1 wrote:try the separate GAs download, per the message on the test builds page.
I tried in Safe Mode too and nothing, it still crashes.
For what it's work, I always download the generic Linux 64bit version (the .run file) which I then run from the terminal to install Virtualbox. The thing is that the VM with Windows XP x86 runs just fine instead, so Virtualbox seems to be working.scottgus1 wrote: * I do note that this problem happened after upgrading the Fedora host to version 36. So perhaps I just have to wait a bit longer for a newer .run file?fth0 wrote: VirtualBox supports Fedora 36 only since ~2 weeks, in the official VirtualBox 6.1.34 release which was rebuilt then. That would be a valid strategy for the VirtualBox 6.1.97 / 7.0 track, depending on the interpretation of "a bit longer".FranceBB wrote:So perhaps I just have to wait a bit longer for a newer .run file?
Did you try the VirtualBox-6.1.35-151573-Linux_amd64.run test build? Or do you need the Windows 11 compatibility without the registry hacks?

Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
I'm not in a rush, to be fair, given that XP boots fine I can do most of the stuff I need over RDP in other servers.fth0 wrote: That would be a valid strategy for the VirtualBox 6.1.97 / 7.0 track, depending on the interpretation of "a bit longer".
The 6.1.97 has the emulated TPM 2.0 chip which is what I've been using to upgrade the VM from Windows 10 Enterprise x64 to Windows 11 Enterprise x64, so unless 6.1.35 also has the TPM emulation, I can't use it.fth0 wrote: Did you try the VirtualBox-6.1.35-151573-Linux_amd64.run test build? FWIW, VirtualBox 6.1.35 doesn't have the TPM emulation.

Right, I see.fth0 wrote:FWIW, VirtualBox 6.1.35 doesn't have the TPM emulation.
Well, I guess it's 6.1.97 or nothing, then.
I'll just wait for something Fedora 36 compatible to come out after 6.1.97 v150532.
Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
Yes, I've been seeing something similar as well. Perhaps a combination of the new kernal, though F36 delivers 5.17.12 for now, not 5.18. But I did notice the 6.1.34 build for F36 is but two weeks old. I have tried the 6.1.35 test build and that's not fairing much better for now.

Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one facing this issue and it's actually reproducible across different Fedora 36 installations.
All in all, hopefully they're gonna update the development snapshot soon-ish.
Yeah, I was on 5.17.12, but I have now installed kernel 5.17.13-300.fc36.x86_64, however the same behavior occurs. I think that until the Oracle dev are gonna make a new build, we're gonna be left in the limbo.btaroli wrote:Perhaps a combination of the new kernal, though F36 delivers 5.17.12 for now, not 5.18. Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
By playing a bit with the settings of the VM (disabling HyperV, limiting the CPU to 1 core etc) I managed to recreate the Guru Meditation Crash after booting:
I've added new logs in case it helps the Oracle developers:
Cheers,
Frank

Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
The actual problem is that VirtualBox 6.1.34 and 6.1.97r150532 do not support Linux kernel 5.17.12+ on the host and will produce random crashes in the guest (pun intended ). See 20914 and Windows 10 Guest on Linux host dies seconds after boot for details.
The VirtualBox test builds 6.1.35r151864 (and newer) are supposed to support Linux kernels 5.18, 5.17.12+, 5.15.44+, 5.10.119+ and more on the host and in the guest. Please report back if it solves the problem.

Thanks for the bug tracker link, I've attached my logs and replied to it.fth0 wrote:The actual problem is that VirtualBox 6.1.34 and 6.1.97r150532 do not support Linux kernel 5.17.12+ on the host and will produce random crashes in the guest (pun intended ). As to 6.1.35, another user replied here viewtopic.php?f=7&t=106071&p=519466#p519466 and looks like it solved the issue with Fedora 36 and kernel 5.18.5, however I can't use that version.
I'm on Fedora 36 with kernel 5.18.5 too, but I was running Virtualbox 6.1.97 which is more "cutting edge" in terms of features, but it's older in terms of build (March 2022 I think) and it doesn't work, so I'm still waiting for the Oracle devs to publish a new development snapshot build for 6.1.97.
To put this into context, the last revision 6.1.35 is based on is 151866 while 6.1.97 is 150532 (so much older), but I can't use 6.1.35 'cause I'm using Windows 11 with the emulated TPM 2.0 chip which the 6.1.35 doesn't have...
In other words, it's either 6.1.97 or nothing, but given that the patch they posted worked for 6.1.35, I hope it's gonna be a matter of days before they roll out a new build for 6.1.97 too.

Re: Windows 11 x64 Guest Guru Meditation Fedora 36 Host
Thanks for the logs, but AFAIU they won't be needed, because bugfixes are usually developed in the internal SVN repository trunk and then backported to the VirtualBox 6.1 branch.FranceBB wrote:Thanks for the bug tracker link, I've attached my logs and replied to it.
Updating the external SVN repository and providing VirtualBox 6.1.97 development snapshots are unrelated additional work and usually done every few weeks. AFAIK, the VirtualBox development had some extraordinary stress in the last weeks and months, so the development snapshots probably fell victim to that.
