I have created a new VM to install a win7 into. I am not even getting the VM to boot - I get the below message and no logs are being created.

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine OPTWin7.

The virtual machine 'OPTWin7' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

Running Linux Miin 20.3 Host
And Virtual box Version 6.1.32 r149290 (Qt5.12.

What happens when you start the VM from within a terminal using VirtualBoxVM --startvm "VM name"?

lol uninstalled and cleaned up and installed latest version Version 6.1.10 r138449 (Qt5.12.8)

Then opened a new VM and still the same message:

At the time you wrote that, the latest version is 6.1.32, not 6.1.10. The latter is about a year old.

FWIW, the detailed error message indicates a corrupt installation. The VBoxRT.so file is either missing or has wrong permissions or access rights.

Yes you are correct , the latest is not 6.1.10 my bad

I have loaded and removed and installed so many versions that it is a mess at present..

below is all the versions I have installed ant they all give the same error message

It is entirely possible that the access rights could be wrong.

Is it possible to get a list of the folders of Virtualbox with their correct access rights?

FWIW, on a Linux Mint 20 host with the older VirtualBox 6.1.30 from Oracle (not from Linux Mint), the VBoxRT.so file has the following properties:

If the permissions and access rights are different on your host, I'd suggest to uninstall all VirtualBox packages and to install only the Oracle VirtualBox package.

I Restored with Timeshift to a date some 2 weeks ago.

Then I re installed VirtualBox

this is the properties on my machine

I still get the following error message whe I try to open the VM

No Log file is generated

I have not managed to open this machine at all since creating it.

every time this message pop up when I try to boot the machine up so as to install win7

I now created another VM for a Manjaro linux live iso, and I get then same erro - my VM does not even boot up

Again the system does not generate any logs to give an indication of the reason fro this

What I did find , comparing my other running system with a win10 vm is that my rights there seems different to the new system:

Reading this whole thread, I think you have a problem with using old VirtualBox versions together with newer Linux kernels, so I'll try and describe the main rule with an example:

If you use VirtualBox 6.1.10 from June 2020, you can only expect it to run on a Linux host using Linux kernel 5.7 (or older), and you can only expect it to be able to run a Linux VM/guest with Linux kernel 5.7 (or older). This is documented in the VirtualBox Change Log as "Linux host and guest: Linux kernel version 5.7 support".

Although I accept that this could be correct - my logic loses me when my Running Linux mint 20.3 is running perfectly with the exact same version of Virtual box:
