Guest can not automount directories or see any on Host

Post by Jonners59 »

I am running Virtual Box Version 6.1.26_Ubuntu r145957 on an xfce HOST (details below) and a Debian Guest to run 3CX IP-PBX. The issue I am facing is that the Guest can not see any of the devices on the LAN, not so important, but access to storage on the HOST is, and none show up. I have set the Network Card to BRIDGED and Promiscuous Mode to Deny and I have used the SHARED FOLDERS and browsed to the desired folders, added a name and selected "Auto Mount" and "Permenent", but they do not open the folders, they seem to only show a mount point as any data is not visible on the Guest and anything added by the Guest is not visible via the Host or any other networked devices.

I'm not a Linux guru, so I'll have to leave to others the diagnostic info you've provided. But I have a couple ideas about seeing things on the LAN and the shared folders.

As you chose, Bridged is the way to put the VM on the LAN so it can see other devices on the LAN. See Virtualbox Networks: In Pictures: Bridged Adapter.

Once you have Bridged in place properly, you have two channels of shared folders:

1. Real shared folders provided by the host OS or other OS's on the LAN, shared over the LAN through Bridged. These are not influenced by any Virtualbox settings besides Bridged enabling the network to the LAN. They are the same as shared folders between physical PCs on the LAN, set up by the individual OS's and picked up by the VM OS through these OS's normal methods, and which can be web-searched through the OS help channels to set up.

2. Virtualbox Shared Folders provided through Guest Additions. These VSF's don't require any network but do require properly-installed Guest Additions in the VM OS. Only the host can provide folders for VSF to share to the VM. See https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04. ... redfolders, and viewtopic.php?f=6&t=104721.

Thanks, Scottgus1
Yes, I did realize 1., but I didn't want to presume anything. Rather someone who knew what they were talking about give me the steer. I had to do a complete rebuild and I am certain network sharing on the host is also an issue.

Point 2 - Yup user dipstick error here. Hadn't installed Guest Additions properly. Been so long I couldn't recall how I had done it 1st time. Forgot it needed starting and it was then added via the menu DEVICES -> install Guest Additions. Feel such a plonker.

However, now installed when I start the guest the Host mouse and keyboard become unresponsive bar being able to just move the mouse about the screen. Have I installed the correct GA for my VB version?????? or is something else wrong????????

VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 6.1.26_Ubuntu r145957
VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.28
============================================================

Update:
I tried to install the latest VM from the VB website but that doesn't work at all. The distros are at least 2 years old.

So tried reinstalling via Synaptic Manager.
Restarted the VM and that works fine, BUT the Guest Additions refuses to install.
Could not mount the media/drive '/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED).

That's a well known symptom, but it has nothing to do with the Guest Additions. It has to do with installing the host extension pack (which enabled USB2/USB3 support) and then also enabling a poorly specified USB capture filter, i.e. one where the "device to be captured" definition is so broad as to match just about anything, e.g. the keyboard and mouse.

So either delete the USB filter in the VM settings, or narrow the filter properties to only match the intended device, AND make sure that you installed the Guest Additions (in the Guest), not the Extension Pack (for the host).

Final note, just in case this is part of the problem: a USB drive can (preferably) be accessed as a host shared folder, or ownership can be assigned to the guest. Not both.

Thanks mpack
Managed to get out of it, for now. I removed the mouse and keyboard before booting and added during and that recaptured them. Couldn't do anything other than power off the host.

What about not being able to install Guest Additions issue?
Could not mount the media/drive '/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED).

The host mouse and keyboard should not be captured using USB Filters. If you are doing so, undo that setup, as Mpack stated. In other words, disable all the USB Filters you have and see if the keyboard and mouse still get captured.

And if you are not using any USB filters, the keyboard and mouse can get captured in the VM before Guest Additions are installed. Tapping the Host key (shown in the lower right corner of the Status Bar in the VM's window; for Windows hosts, defaults to Right Ctrl) will release the mouse and keyboard back to the host. Once GAs are properly installed in the VM OS, Mouse Integration will be active, which will allow the host mouse to glide seamlessly between host and VM, and the keyboard will follow.

Thank you, but it wasn't that they were captured, they just stopped responding, bar moving the curser around the screen. Forcing a reboot by hitting the power option was all I could do and even then itdidn't work until I disconnected the cables and then mid boot of the host reconnecting them, showing as new devices detected. Sorted now.

Well, sort of. The blog issue is not resolved yet. Still unable to link the shared folders and getting this or messages like it with Guest Additions install:

That is basically saying that Guest Additions is already mounted, which I do not believe it is.

It means that a CD is already in the drive, and quite often that CD will be the GAs ISO that you already inserted. Most Linux APIs have a "force eject" option on the dialog in case you want to reload the tray anyway.

In future please type the error code into a Google search, e.g. search for "VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED site:forums.virtualbox.org". This would be especially productive as this question has been asked and answered MANY times before.
And over 300 similar blogs - so something is wrong with the design and complaints about finding the correct GA... the actual blog was never stated as resolved.
I complete agree. So I went to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads search for "guest additions" in that page and found:

Note: After upgrading VirtualBox it is recommended to upgrade the guest additions as well.

Seems logical, but how and where? I was on the download page.

Searching further on https://www.virtualbox.org on '"Guest Additions" download' I found more than 300 results. I think it would be more user friendly to have just i the VirtualBox menu, in "help" a selection to click to download (and install) the correct version of "Guest additions".

The quote was "Someone set on the internet ..." I am here on the official VirtualBox forum, so if the manual does not give me the information I need I think this is the best place to ask.

This particular topic, though titled "Ubuntu 20.04 dual display", really centers on VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED, which is a different problem. And the title of this topic is not accurate.

Were you able to solve the VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED problem?
which was not answered.

Looking at this one viewtopic.php?f=3&t=86939, it talks of manually mounting the CD drive first, which mine is, but worth a look.
Installation generally involves the following steps:
Before installing the Guest Additions, you prepare your guest system for building external kernel modules. This works as described in Section 2.3.2, “The Oracle VM VirtualBox Kernel Modules”, except that this step must be performed in your Linux guest instead of on a Linux host system:

Start the virtual machine in which you have installed Windows.

Select Optical Drives from the Devices menu in the virtual machine's menu bar and then Choose/Create a Disk Image. This displays the Virtual Media Manager, described in Section 5.3, “The Virtual Media Manager”.

In the Virtual Media Manager, click Add and browse your host file system for the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso file.

This file is in the additions folder where you installed Oracle VM VirtualBox, usually /opt/VirtualBox/.

In the Virtual Media Manager, select the ISO file and click the Add button

Insert the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso CD file into your Linux guest's virtual CD-ROM drive.

Change to the directory where your CD-ROM drive is mounted and run the following command as root:

Code: Select all

sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
If you suspect that something has gone wrong, check that your guest is set up correctly and run the following command as root:

Code: Select all

 rcvboxadd setup
I'll try and revert

Not quite. It means there is already a CD in the drive, which Linux refuses to eject until you unmount the filesystem. On Windows guests I've never seen this happen with CDs, perhaps because Windows knows that CDs are usually read only, so can't be corrupted.

Yes, that other CD is often the GAs CD, but it could also for example be the OS install ISO.

What there is no room for doubt about is the basic meaning of the VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED error. After all, what other media might it be referring to while you're trying to insert a CD? And btw, although this error is reported by VirtualBox, it is Linux which is refusing to unlock the drive automatically. A Linux special.

Re: Guest can not automount directories or see any on Host

This is driving me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried before I had to stop - guests arriving and staying for a few days over NY - and back in today.
The "Select Optical Drives from the Devices menu in the virtual machine's menu bar " There is no actual menu item called "Optical Drives" in the menu bar. Instructions should match what is there. There is "Settings" -> "Storage" and in there a choice for adding Controllers (IDE or SATA) and optical drives etc. I am assuming this is the correct place and based on looking at an old machine I have, I am guessing I should:

1. add "Controller: IDE" and then
2. add an "Optical Drive".
3. In the optical drive search for the correct "Guest Additions" and add it.
4. Once booted then install the "Guest Additions" by doing the following:

Code: Select all

cd /media/cdrom0
assumes set up above to be cd rom0

Code: Select all

sudo sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
5. Reboot the guest, though shouldn't be necessary.

That SHOULD work.

So having done this there are no obvious changes.

My shared folders do not appear even after a number of reboots. I can browse for them via the folder app "Other Locations", but they do not automount and can not be used as local folders by the Guest apps, as per "Shared Folders". This is something I had working before the rebuild and allowed my IP-PBX to backup and save voice mails and have access to wav files for announcements and on hold and IVR instructions.

I can not do a bidirectional "Drag n Drop" or "Shared Clipboard", but then I never have had that working on any machine at any time with any build.

And sometimes the Host keyboard and mouse clicks stop working and I have to hard reboot if I want to do anything.

Jonners59 wrote:There is no actual menu item called "Optical Drives" in the menu bar.
This is correct, because "Optical Drives" is a fly-out submenu of the Devices menu in the VM window's menu bar.
Thus not:
VM window > menu bar > Optical Drives
Rather it's:
VM window > menu bar > Devices > Optical Drives
as in:
"Select Optical Drives from the Devices menu in the virtual machine's menu bar." :|

Note that if you put the VM into Scaled Mode, you'll not see a menu bar in the VM window. The default keyboard command to undo Scaled Mode is Host-key & C (Host-key on PCs defaults to Right Ctrl.)

You may also not see a menu bar in the VM window or a Devices menu in the menu bar if you footled about in the VM's Settings > User Interface.
Jonners59 wrote:There is "Settings" -> "Storage" and in there a choice for adding Controllers (IDE or SATA) and optical drives etc.
Your instructions are for adding another CD drive. While that may allow you to get another CD in the VM, it does not solve the VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED error with the first CD. If the second CD drive also goes VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED, are you going to add a third CD drive? Then a fourth? Eventually you'll run out of ports.

As Mpack pointed out, you have to unmount the CD inside the Linux OS VM to get the running VM OS to release its lock on the CD, then you can eject the CD and load another CD.

Another possibility is to shut down the VM. Then you can get into the Settings > Storage > Optical Drive (the existing original drive) and eject the CD/ISO there. Since the VM OS is shut down it no longer as the CD mounted so you should not have a VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED error trying to load a new CD or ISO when the VM is started again.

Now that you've finagled the GAs into installing, please do the following:

1. Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS.

2. Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

3. Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. Zip the VM's .vbox file (not the .vbox-prev file), and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions if the folder that opens does not show a .vbox file.)

MMM the clue is "read carefully". It is clunky. Correct, and obvious when you realise and in hindsight, but not so if unfamiliar as bore out by the large number of queries on many websites and forums for this subject (one quoted some time ago he'd found 300 so far - as below). When these were written by regular users/developers they naturally assume everyone is conversant and all is very clear, but others don't see it the same. The below is clearer. I always used people who were unfamiliar and non-IT literate to validate instructions. Anyway, not here to fix that. The comments were to help me should I need this in a few years, and others who find themselves in the same boat who also didn't see the obvious.

Actually, they both apply, but are from different routes. Yours is via the menu in the open guest and mine from the Virtualbox window's VM list. But that's good. Two ways to get to the same place.
scottgus1 wrote:as in:

Yes, agree, but far more clunky and open to misunderstanding than the above two options.

Thank you. Been caught out many times with that one. I tend now to tick the box in User Interface in the Virtualbox window's VM list, or use the Settings there instead. :-D

I have 3. Is that too many?
1 x DVD
1 x the OS
1 x Guest Additions....

Is this wrong?

Not sure that the above suggestions, "As Mpack pointed out..." and "Another possibility..." is needed, but concerned by your comment that I may have too many devices attached.

As stated I am not seeing any errors now, but nothing seems different. What I am not getting still is the Shared drives showing up/mounting. Normally or they used to appear in something like a mounted drive \\VBOXSVR, but this doesn't appear, so I can't back up the IP-PBX nor save the voice messages where they should be on the host.

Also, I am not getting the bidirectional "Drag n Drop" or "Shared Clipboard"
