Blank screen after uninstall, reinstall and upgrade

Post by johnbendi »

I'm getting a blank screen when trying to run my Windows 10 guest. The state actually gets to running but the screen remains blank. I can;t see any remarkable errors from the logs.
I have attached the logs so experts can help to examine it:
Windows 10-2021-11-11-07-55-21.log
(110.8 KiB) Downloaded 6 times
I recently downgraded virtualbox then reinstalled the version before the downgrade and then I upgraded to the latest virtualbox version, so I don't know if the VDI has become corrupted.
But that should be obvious from the log if that is the case

I don't see much at all in the log - it looks like it was grabbed while the VM was still running and hence omits almost everything of interest beyond the earliest stages.

Reduce VM cores to 2, then (as a test) try disabling 3D acceleration.

I have tried reducing the cores to 2, disabled the 3D acceleration and also took the log refreshed after shutdown of the new setup. The screen still comes up blank.

Attached is the recent logfile split due to file size limitation:
Windows 10-2021-11-11-boot-up.log
(81.66 KiB) Downloaded 8 times
Windows 10-2021-11-11-shut-down.log
(62.34 KiB) Downloaded 7 times

There still seems to be an important chunk missing from the middle period.

Why not just zip the log?

You have another hypervisor already running (e.g. KVM), and they don't share VT-x with VirtualBox. The solution would be to prevent KVM from running.

Correct. I met the same issue here, I've installed and run virtualbox 6.1.28-147628~Debian~bullseye in debian bullseye after i upgraded to bullseye and virtualbox crashed. so i installed KVM instead.

Now the kernel has both vbox and KVM, but only one can survive. but you can follow this keyword searching result "Using KVM and VirtualBox side by side" guide and set them both work.

just rmod or lnsmod and stop the reverse KVM or virtualbox.
