Keyboard layout

Post by carlnielsen »

Running Virtualbox on a Linux Mint host. Windows 7 client.

I access the client using rdesktop usually.

Up to recently all good. But suddenly the client thinks I have a GB keyboard but it is US. So Shift-3 gives a £ instead of # and my \ keys gives a #. Things like that.

The client OS is set for English - United States in regional settings keyboard.

When I run rdesktop I send "-k en-us"

The change is that I recently updated the host from Mint 19 to Mint 20. Not sure why that should affect it.

I tried connecting to the client using Virtualbox directly rather than rdesktop. No difference.

Have another Win7 Virtual machine which did NOT change. It still interprets the KB correctly.

Any advice? Muchas gracias.

Interesting situation!

So you have two VMs on your host. One has the keyboard problem, one does not?

I would take full backups of the two VMs, perhaps the whole host. Then swap the VMs' hard drive files (assuming no snapshots are being used in either VM) and see if the problem jumps to the other VM. This will pin down if the problem is in the VM's OS or not.

Even weirder.

Went to test now and all back to normal. I didn't do anything. Maybe I'm going nuts

So that's a close.

Gotta love intermittent glitches, huh? Guess it's time to give the elves a holiday...

Glad you're back running well again!
