I thought that I was running 6.1.20, last used in April 2021. Now the login fails with an empty black terminal screen.
The log shows
VirtualBox VM 5.2.42_Ubuntu r137960 linux.amd64 (Jun 5 2020 08:26:08) release log
The Virtual Media Manager shows an error with VBoxGuestAdditions.iso when my computer does not have an optical drive.
The icon has changed from quarter circle to VM in box. Does that mean I am mixing modules from different forks?
I previously encountered a version mismatch when I installed Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.1.22.vbox-extpack but that has gone away when I tried to install virtualbox-ext-pack_5.2.42-1_ubuntu1.18.04.1_all.deb.
VirtualBox was working, now stalls with black screen

Re: VirtualBox was working, now stalls with black screen
You are not using VirtualBox, you are using the Ubuntu fork. Since your question seems to center on how this particular version of the fork came to be installed using Ubuntu's installer, I suggest that you ask about it on an Ubuntu forum.
