Unable to change screen resolution on Windows 7 guest machine

Post by emil78 »

My host os is MX Linux and Virtualbox version is 6.1. I installed Windows 7 and then installed guest additions, but i am unable to change the screen resolution or go to full screen. The screen resolution of my laptop is 1920x1080.
Any idea what could be causing this problem?

You've been here long enough that you shouldn't need to be prompted to provide a VM log.

I am not sure if this is the correct log file. It's from this location ~/.config/VirtualBox/VBoxSVC.log
VBoxSVC.log
(9.4 KiB) Downloaded 3 times

Something else i can add: when i start Windows 7 virtual machine and go to View>Virtual Screen 1 i can select all resolutions except these - 1680x1050, 1920x1080, 1920x1200.
Also, i have other linux guest machines and i don't have a problem changing the screen resolution for them. I have this problem only with Windows 7 machine.

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Also, is there a maximum size set in the main Virtualbox window, File menu, Preferences, Display?

This is the log file:
Windows 7.log.zip
(34.26 KiB) Downloaded 5 times
In File>Preferences>Display maximum screen size was set to Automatic, i change it to None, bit it didn't make difference.

6.1.14_Debian is not VirtualBox, it's a build from the VirtualBox sources by the Debian crew. Hence it's not supported here. Please install an official release of VirtualBox.

27MB is not enough graphics RAM. Max it out.

I increased the video memory to 64mb and that fixed the problem. Thanks.

Great that you're up and running! FWIW you do have more room to max the video RAM, especially because of the big host screen size:
00:00:01.448089 Host RAM: 7928MB (7.7GB) total, 4844MB (4.7GB) available
00:00:01.642233 RamSize <integer> = 0x00000000a0000000 (2 684 354 560, 2 560 MB, 2.5 GB)
00:00:01.642575 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000001b00000 (28 311 552, 27 MB)
Though host RAM is low by today's standards, there would be plenty, especially if you enable 3D acceleration, which is not enabled now.

Your host also has a glitch in the Extension Pack:
00:00:01.559869 Installed Extension Packs:
00:00:01.559938 VNC (Version: r0; VRDE Module: unusable because of 'Failed to load '/usr/lib/virtualbox/ExtensionPacks/VNC/ExtPack.xml': Invalid version string: @VBOX_VERSION_STRING_RAW@')
00:00:01.559944 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 6.1.14 r140239; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)
The regular EP is OK, but the VNC EP is bad. Probably not causing the problem but VNC remote through Virtualbox's server will be KO.

Is this error because i am not using the original Virtualbox, but instead the Virtualbox from MX Linux repository?

You're using a Debian-built fork of the Virtualbox source code, tuned by Debian to their desires and needs. Anyone is allowed to make a fork, but the forks can be changed, and we don't know what was changed, so we don't support the forks.

Your error may or may not be from the fork, but since you are up and running you may not need to change to official Virtualbox. But it's something that may be needed if you run into other problems.
