[Solved] usb stopped working in windows 10

Post by ranchupanchu »

Hello,

I work a lot with virtualbox and usb and it worked well in my machine untill today.
But suddenly now the machine does not recognize insert and remove of usb devices.
It keep showing the previous detection and on trying to press on the device is does not regnize it "...still busy".
Is it some windows update that did it ?
I tried uninstall it, install again, install extension again, install guest machine. Nothing helps :(

Please help,
Thanks,
Ran

Well, you tell me. When was the last Windows update applied? Chances are that it might be the one responsible. They have a tendency to do that. Re-install the guest additions.

Hello socrates,

Thanks for your reply !
I have tried to uninstall the guest additions and then installed it back. It did not help.
The strange thing is that the mouse works, but storage device do not.
I see it on inserting in the menu "generic mass storage device", but on cliking in it, it changed status, but it does not seem to detect the storage in the guess machine . On removing the device, it still appears in virtual box usb device menu....
But windows seems to detect it OK.
I see the same issue in other VM machines installed (ubuntu 64, ubuntu 32, and other) . I did not had it before.
After several remove and insertion it appears more than one in the device usb menu....
I really don't know how to solve (or even workaround ) this issue. USB is quite essential.

Please help.

It just added a product field for the same device ? which is called "Integrated Camera" (though it is not a camera!) when storage card is not plugged ????
Does anyone understand what it means ?

Thank you,
Ranchu

The post about #4: USB Filters has a numbered list. I want to know exactly which number failed. Do you realized that "it doesn't work" is a pretty generic statement? I mean you could have run out of hard disk as far as I know. That could have been a failure. So, please be specific when you have to. And keep the details short when you have to, like all the details about the USB. That's not needed. Yet...

I see in the menu of device->usb, that the "Generic Mass Storage Device [0100]" has the following details:
vendor ID: 058f
productID: 6366

For some reason after removing the device, it still shows in device menu "Generic Mass Storage Device [0100]"
Thanks,
Ran

It seems to me that you're NOT reading my questions, and you did NOT read the series of articles that I pointed you to. I will be waiting until I understand that you've read them both. Twice.

Hi,

Sorry, I just didn't understand what you meant in the last question, so my answer before was wrong:
"1. Make sure that the Extension Pack (ExtPack) is installed on the host"
It's the same version for both VM and extension - 5.0.28 (I used this version on same machine/windows just ~2 month before without issues with usb)
Make sure that at least USB2 (EHCI) is enabled in your VM settings.
USB2 is enabled.
Under VM Settings » Port » USB, create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID. The Name is nothing more than a label and is not actively participating in the filtering process. You can change it at will. I usually use "Stick: XYZ" or "Joystick: ABC" or "Other: IJK".
Unplug the device.
Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to, reach the desktop, and wait until any disk activity has stopped.
Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest.
Now the card is not detectable in windows (no new window with storage content), yet I can't see the storage device in /dev/sdX .

Thank you for the help,
Ranchu

That's Right .

An advanced question:
Can we make make wireshark work together with VM ?

No clue whatsoever. I'm not sure if having two USB filters at that level is a possibility. I'll ask in the developer mailing list and see if they know the answer. Do you need Wireshark USB filter or just Wireshark?

Hi,

I'm not working these days anyway with wireshark on host, so it's not too much important.
I can actually use wireshark in guest if I need, so I can overcome this issue, when needed.

Thanks a lot for your assistance,
Ranchu
