VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED

Postby jmatson » 6. Apr 2011, 18:50

I am running SUSE 11.4 on a Dell Optiplex 755 and the latest version of VirtualBox OSE from Virtualbox.org.

Everything installs and compiles just fine, but when I go to start my VM, I get "VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED". In reading some other posts on this error, it appears there are setting in the BIOS to enable virtulization which I have toggled back and forth with no luck.

Anyone seen this before? My previous OS (SUSE 4.3) with VirtualBox worked just fine.

Thanks ahead of time ... -- Jerry

You may need to actually update your bios. Dell has been known to disable the hardware virtualization.
Only other thing that would cause this is if you have KVM or some other hardware-v virtualizer or kernel running.

If you have made sure that the hardware-v is enabled in your bios I don't know what else to tell you.
You may need to contact Dell to find out what is wrong. Some people have said that they had to actually turn off (disable) the hardware-v feature in bios to get it to work. Meaning they label was backwards I guess.

Trusted execution was the issue!!!

THANK YOU!!
After turning Trusted Execution off, VirtualBox started working just fine.
