FWIW, I see the prompt for every regular minor VirtualBox update, on all of my macOS, Linux and Windows hosts. The procedure is as follows:

I download and install the new VirtualBox version itself, using different methods depending on the host OS. After completely finishing the installation, I manually start the VirtualBox Manager, and then it presents a dialog that the installed Extension Pack doesn't match the VirtualBox version, allowing to download and install the matching EP version with an extended series of dialogs. Some people have even complained in the forums that they may suffer from RSI after mouse clicking through far too many confirmation dialogs. ;)

And the vbox.log will reliably tell us if you are still getting Nvidia driver errors. Can you please post the vbox.log?
The previous attempt on 6.1.15-14873; this time it's 6.1.15-140899. Installed that and the matching extension pack, rebooted.

The initial error comes up in a dialog box, screencap attached.

Then I get:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine CMcCF.

The virtual machine 'CMcCF' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1). More details may be available in 'V:\VMs\CMcCF\Logs\VBoxHardening.log'.

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}

(which is why I only posted VBoxHardening.log last time)

Here are both logs this time :-)

Etiher the wrong logs was posted, or you got the wrong installer:
00:00:02.122836 VirtualBox VM 6.1.14 r140239 win.amd64 (Sep 4 2020 08:29:36) release log
00:00:02.218905 Installed Extension Packs:
00:00:02.218914 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 6.1.15 r140899; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)
Also, for the purpose of checking the Nvidia drivers, 3D acceleration must be turned on, and your guest's was off:
00:00:02.318556 [/Devices/vga/0/Config/] (level 4)
00:00:02.318557 3DEnabled <integer> = 0x0000000000000000 (0)
Can you take a shot at those logs again, please?

That was the most recent log file - I only just noticed that it's from the previous build after I deleted the logs and attempted 6.1.15 for a third time. The vboxhardening.log file is the only one that gets written.

Until we see a posted log with 6.1.15 Virtualbox and 6.1.15 Extension Pack and 3D acceleration enabled, there's not much else we'll be able to do regarding the Nvidia driver problem.

I'll have another look when a new build (test or otherwise) comes out.

The bug has been fixed with version 6.1.16. Now it works again with activated 3D acceleration in the VirtualBox for guests with NVidia graphics card.

FWIW all the instability problems I had with the previous Nvidia driver are gone, with VirtualBox 6.1.16 and GeForce 456.71. Nice!

Can I fix the issue, if I just remove one of certificates from dll files, using this tool? https://stackoverflow.com/questions/341 ... from-a-dll

This issue is still not fixed with 472.12 nvidia drivers and virtualbox 5.2.42 version

Next version don't have this fix which changelog shows up:

Code: Select all

VirtualBox 5.2.44 (released July 14 2020)

This is a maintenance release. The following items were fixed and/or added:

API: Fix unintentionally enabled audio due to a settings file version dependent bug
VBoxManage: Fix crash of 'VBoxManage internalcommands repairhd' when processing invalid input (bug #19579)

Why not try updating your Virtualbox?

If this is the host PC, the physical computer, then yes, you're stuck at 5.2.x.

However, if you're only talking about the VMs, then no, all OS's 16-bit to 64-bit, from DOS to 11, and all sorts of Linux, are compatible with the latest Virtualbox.

What host OS are you running?
