[Resolved] Getting 'running in software rendering mode' on Cinnamon DE

Post by emil78 »

I installed debin buster with Cinnamon DE but when i start the virtual machine i get 'running in software rendering mode' message. I installed the guest additions but still getting the message. Is this a issue with Cinnamon or with Vritualbox?

That's mostly a problem with your hosts graphoics drivers.

We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe or recreate the problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

At the beginning I thought that this would be another "GPU drivers rejected due to hardening", but it turns out that it's a more basic issue; you simply haven't enabled the 3D acceleration for your VM:
00:00:03.054552 [/Devices/vga/0/Config/] (level 4)
00:00:03.054560 VMSVGA3dEnabled <integer> = 0x0000000000000000 (0)
00:00:03.054563 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000001000000 (16 777 216, 16 MB)
Go to the "VM Settings" » "Display" » "Screen". Enable 3D acceleration. Increase the VRAM to the max of 128 MB.
