[Solved] Windows 10 Guest Format Fails on VirtualBox 6.0

Postby RxTxAu » 18. Aug 2019, 19:42

Host: Windows 10 Pro is version 1903, build 18362.267 installed on 9Aug2019
Guest: Attempting to install Windows 10 Pro – same version as above.

The system is a 64 bit Windows 10 system running on a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 UEFI motherboard with an AMD 3.50 GHz FX-6300 six core CPU running with 8GB of DDR3.
The C: Drive is a Kingston SUV400S37240G 240GB SSD with a 4TB D: drive.
The Windows 10 Pro is version 1903, build 18362.267 installed on 9Aug2019 & fully updated.
The VirtualBox is installed on C: Drive & I have been using Fixed Size 10GB VDI VirtualBox Disk Images left in the default location on C: drive.

1. I added the New Windows 10 Virtual Machine with 2048MB Memory & a Fixed Size 10GB VDI VirtualBox Disk Image that was installed in the default location on C: drive.

2. I attempted to install the Windows 10 system on the Machine.
The ISO I was trying to use is the same one that I successfully used recently to build my machine.

3. I entered my Windows Key & ran the Windows Set Up.

4. When the Windows Set Up gets to formatting the drive, it asks “Where do you want to install Windows?”

It shows the drive details as: “Drive 0 Unallocated Space” “Total Size 10.0 GB” “Free Space 10.0 GB”
Then gives the Error Message “We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.”

I successfully installed Xp SP3 with the same drive settings but only 1024MB memory

Any assistance to help fix this would be appreciated.

10GB is too small for Windows 10. My Windows 10 32-bit tablet, with a fresh install, took 16GB.

Try at least 25GB, and you'd need some GB for apps too. Also, you can use dynamic VDIs, so your build time for the guest will be shorter.

Using the host's license key on the guest may (will?) deactivate the host.

The problem was that the drive was too small.

The product key was for the VM Windows 10 Guest only - a separate new key.

Windows 10 appears to have installed properly & to be working properly now.

Thanks,
Brian.
