It seems Intel may not keep the drivers listed in How To: Install XP with SATA support (Improved July 2011) available for download much longer:

Note: That pages says it's for Win7 x64, but instructions say XP and it installed fine on XP Pro 32bit. Also, it's a single file download self-extractor instead of multiple downloads from Intel.

Here is an alternative that worked for my 32bit XP Pro VM (non RAID):Intel wrote:End Of Life - This download, Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (AHCI) for Windows XP*/Vista* on Intel® 6 Series Chipset-Based Desktop Boards 11.2.0.1006, will no longer be available after Sept. 13, 2019 and will not be supported with any additional functional, security, or other updates. All versions are provided as is. Intel recommends that users of Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (AHCI) for Windows XP*/Vista* on Intel® 6 Series Chipset-Based Desktop Boards 11.2.0.1006 uninstall and/or discontinue use as soon as possible.
