diskfull in ubuntu vm installation

i installed ubuntu 7.10 on virtualbox 1.6.2. I have used it for nearly a week. but there is a problem today, that ubuntu says the disk is full. i allocated a 40G vdi image on my 192G free drive, and the size of this vdi image is 36.6G now. when i use "du -h" in "/" directory to check how much space i have used in ubuntu ,the result is only 7.4G. I can't write only files into the file system now. can anybody help me out? Thanks!

I think this is more of a general OS question than an issue with VB. The issue you might have, is that in Linux, some file systems like ext3 use superblocks. Those are blocks reserved for additional data in case a bad sector or other errors are detected on a disk. The more you write to a drive and the larger it is, the more space it reserves. Use Google to see how to reduce this.
