Ubuntu guest highly lagging on Vista host

Post by sephirothrr »

I installed Hardy, but my wireless didn't work, so I decided to use it in a VirtualBox instead. However, the lag is painful, so much so that there is a five to ten second gap between screen changes. Also, because of this lag, I can't use the mouse, as I can't control it.

This is my config page:

and

I've tried all sorts of ranges for RAM and Video memory, and many combinations of the advanced options. I may have missed something though.

My system is Vista Home Premium (32bit) with Aero off.
AMD Turion64 2 Ghz
2 GB DDR2 RAM
128 MB ATI x1250 Graphics

I'm completely lost and I need this to work as soon as possible.
Please help.

What do you have installed on your Guest? Any advanced effects? If it's the default install, then Compiz-Gnome is running and is causing this error. See the Forum FAQ about it. So turn off Desktop Effects.

Except I can't do anything after logging in. Just too slow.
After fiddling around, I discovered that the VBox is loading fine, it's windows as a whole that lags every time VBox starts graphics, even when just at the splash. Is there some way around that?

Edit: I typed 'metacity --replace' in a terminal, but nothing happens. The cursor moves to the next line as if it was loading, and I waited for five minutes, but nothing happened.

You can try to run from a TTY (Host+F1-6) to remove compiz-gnome. After that, log in from the GUI and see what it does now.

How would I remove that from the tty?
When I typed 'metacity --replace' in that prompt, it gave me some error about the X interface.

Please get yourself a bit more informed about Linux. You can use sudo to run commands as super user, aptitude and apt-get can be used as command line commands to install and remove packages.

If you're still unlucky, try Xubuntu, or Ubuntu JeOS. Those will not have special effects by default.

I don't mean to be obnoxious, but are you always so condescending?

I'm 'informed' about Ubuntu enough to administrate well if everything is working, but it's not, which is why I am having problems.

I think you are misunderstanding. I CAN'T DO ANYTHING once the Virtual OS gets past GRUB. Just moving the mouse takes forever. I think (well, hope, really) that it's a problem with my host settings, as that is pretty much the only thing that I can fix.

Ah, now you give some more info. Should have asked for that in the first place . Please see the Forum Posting Guide for details you need to provide. Giving the full Guest settings is useful ;).

Just out of curiosity, what wireless card do you have? Maybe they already have it supported, but you just need to enable it. Or use ndiswrapper ;).

I gave my guest settings in the first post - the tinypic links...
I have an Atheros 5007EG. Actually, it was because of this card that I switched to a VBox, as I couldn't get my dual-boot Ubuntu to recognize it, even after several Madwifi / ndiswrapper install.

Right. I answer and read so many topics I forget who supplied their settings and who didn't. I don't have a Linux Desktop Guest, only the Server of Ubuntu. And that goes without issues. Though it runs on my Linux. I will try and see if I can reproduce this behaviour of yours on my XP Host.
