usb devices missing

Post by mrdata »

I am running a windows 7 host and a windows xp guest. its worked for years.
The host is running Virtualbox 5.2.16 r123759 (Qt5.6.2)
I had a list of USB devices that I routinely used in the guest. They included a HP printer, an HP scanner, an audio device and a disk drive.
Now when I >Devices>USB> "No USB devices connected" and "USB Settings". When I click on "USB Settings" I get the normal "Settings" page and nothing available or set. None of the connections are available nor does there seem to be a way to connect to the USB devices.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I have old applications that only run in XP that are critical.

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click and "Show Log" in the GUI, save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip, and attach the zip here.

You didn't attach any logs.
Please try to re-install VirtualBox by right-clicking and selecting "Run As Administrator". Make sure that you completely uninstall any 3rd party antivirus before that. The symptoms you're describing seem to describe an incomplete installation of the USB device filter. But do post the log asked.

Funny, because mpack clearly said:

Did you try to re-install VirtualBox? Here's the complete set of instructions:
  1. Uninstall VirtualBox. Your VMs are going to be untouched. Reboot.
  2. You may want to clean up your registry and/or filesystem at this point. CCleaner is a freeware utility that could help you. Mind the installation, it comes with "offers" from 3rd parties, known as "bundleware". Also, check out Device Cleanup program that helps you to remove any unused devices from your computer, mainly multiple "Host-Only Adapter #n".
  3. Download (if you haven't already) the latest VirtualBox and its matching ExtPack. Store them in a common location, i.e. not on "Desktop", or "Documents", but to "Public/Downloads" for example.
  4. Uninstall (don't simply disable) all 3rd party antivirus. If you're afraid about your computer being vulnerable, pull the Ethernet plug, disconnect your WiFi, don't go browsing around.
  5. Locate the downloaded file in Windows Explorer. Right-click on the installer and select "Run-as-Administrator", even if you are the administrator. At the end of the installation, choose to "Start Oracle VM VirtualBox". Do not worry if your VMs do not show up.
  6. If you're going to install the ExtPack, go to File » Preferences » Extensions. Click on the icon with the orange, down-pointing arrow on the right. Select the ExtPack from the previous steps.
  7. Quit VirtualBox. Re-start VirtualBox as you would normally, i.e. from the Desktop shortcut or the Start menu.
  8. Update the Guest Additions (GAs) in your guest(s), if the GAs are available for a specific guest.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Hmm. Lots of dubious stuff in the log, e.g. 3D acceleration enabled (unlikely that an XP guest can use it), all 4 host cores allocated (leaving none for the host). 10GB RAM allocated to a 32bit XP era VM (which therefore can't use more than 4GB).

There's no obvious reason for USB devices to be missing as such, though I'm assuming the OP has read the FAQ and is aware that XP doesn't support USB3 ports or devices. If only USB3 ports are available then attaching a USB2 hub is one way to force the port to operate in USB2 mode.

I sincerely admire your optimism! ;)

BTW: the FAQ that mpack is referring to...
