VirtualBox won't launch either Ubuntu32 or Lubuntu32

Post by Mantiss »

Hi all,

I am just getting started with VirtualBox. I have created two VM's however neither of them will launch. They start normally, i.e. I see the boot screen etc. but then fail.

I tried with Ubuntu 32bit 1st, no dice, created one with Lubuntu 32but, no luck.

This is an older machine and it doesn't support virtualization well I believe, at least I have explored and there is no way I can make it run 64bit images (last bios update was in 2012 and it is not supported.)

Long story short, I am posting here the Ubuntu 32bit logs and png. Can someone knowledgeable give me a hand here? I am not adverse to the techie stuff, I just am a complete noob when it comes to VirtualBox :)

Thank you in advance!

For some reason I had to compress the log files, they were above the 128kb limit??

I am running the latest version of VirtualBox, 5.2.16 r123759 (Qt5.6.2)
I am using the following release of Ubuntu: ubuntu-16.04.5-desktop-i386.iso
I am using Windows10 and I know that with the hardware I have I can load both ubuntu 16.04 32bit and 18.04 64bit from a thumb drive.
Any other questions please ask away :)

00:00:38.944937 !! VCPU0: Guru Meditation -2403 (VERR_TRPM_DONT_PANIC)
This is the Guru Meditation that you're getting.
00:00:19.276789 HM: HMR3Init: Falling back to raw-mode: VT-x is not available
And this is "why" you're getting that error.
00:00:20.079721 Full Name: "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz"
Unfortunately, your Core2 Quad Q8200 does not support VT-x. So, you can't run this VM as is. Your best bet would be to try something from the 4.3.x series, the 5.0.x series or the 5.1.x series. All of them are unsupported.

The higher the VirtualBox version, the more dependent it is on the existence of VT-x, as the "raw mode" will be getting phased out over time.

Thank you so much for your help, I have tried regressing the versions of VirtualBox all the way back to 4.3.24 with absolutely no luck. I am going to have to try something different tomorrow it seems, I will dash out everything for the time being and perhaps having an oldie version like 4.2 or 4.1 will do the trick.

Thank you again for your sleuthing, much appreciated! I knew that running this on my desktop would be a long shot.

You are running the latest Win10. Going back to 4.x (from a period when Win10 wasn't invented) is a really long shot. It's a "miracle" that 4.3.24 works at all.

It is. And 99.999% it won't work. Unfortunately you got to face the fact that the CPU is not powerful enough to run virtualization. And it's not the age.

Until recently (1 month ago) I had an Intel Pentium D 940 @ 3.20 GHz from Q1-2006. It had VT-x. I could run Win10-64 on Win10-64. Not fast, more like a proof of concept, but it could. It got a "brain transplant" (motherboard/CPU) for an Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.5 GHz from Q1-2008, which also supports VT-x. So, it's not the age of your CPU, it's the capabilities that it has.

BTW, the new motherboard/CPU cost me 70€, used. So, if you don't want to invest in a big-kahuna computer, look around in your computer repair shops for an old computer. You never know... ;)
