[Solved] VirtualBox (Windows 7 host) 'Hardening' error when starting VM (Linux guest)

Post by marki »

My VB Windows 7 host is now failing with a 'hardening' error - until very recently it worked fine. Could it be caused by a Windows Update? I have read the forum but I am not sure what to look for. Log files are attached.

Thanks for the help.

Environment:-

Host: Windows 7 Enterprise v6.1 Build 7601 Service Pack 1
System: 64-bit
Installed Memory: 8 GB

VirtualBox Graphical User Interface
Version 5.2.12 r122591 (Qt5.6.2)

Error Message:

The VM log provided shows a VM running for 4 hours. The hardening log is not completed.

I have tried one of the solutions suggested in a previous post (by djex81), which is a workaround by changing a Windows Registry key START for the VBoxDrv driver.
However this has not worked for me - although the hardening error has gone away, there is a new error caused I think by the driver not starting properly (see Attachment).

I am not sure where to go from here.
Thanks for the help.

I have just discovered the cause of my problem, courtesy of another earlier post.
I found that Trusteer 'Endpoint' software had been loaded in the last couple of months. Both 'Rapport' and 'Endpoint' can cause 'hardening' issues, in my case on a Windows 7 host.

Having uninstalled Endpoint, all is well. I also responded to the IBM post-uninstall questionnaire to raise the problem.

Thanks to the forum, it got me on the right lines at last.
