Hardening Error

Post by MatteoCaredda »

Hello

After a windows update, I'm receiving an error while trying to run a VM.
The error regards an issue with hardening, so I'm attaching the hardening log.

Can somebody tell me if they see an issue from the log?

BTW: I've already tried the hardening diagnosis guide, with no success watsoever :(

This means that something has stuck its nose into the VirtualBox process without being properly signed. The log references Symantec Firewall and Avecto Defendpoint as known adversaries that you should start by uninstalling. You may have other similar things that you need to remove as well.

Unfortunately, it is impossible :(

They are managed by the administrator. The only thing I can do is disable Avecto, hoping it will be enough.
I'ts a shame, because before the update all worked well...

See if you can exclude directories/applications from Avecto.

Let them know that something is not right after the update. Maybe the Certificate Database didn't get properly updated. Try to reboot your host and see if that improves the situation, no guarantees, just shooting in the dark...

I am having this problem too.

I installed the latest VBox and uninstalled Avast. I tested with Avast installed and uninstalled. I also tried the following:

1- Right clicking on VBoxDrv.inf and selecting install.
2- Running "sc start vboxdrv" at a command prompt.

I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64 on the computer.

"Virtual Box - Error In supR3HardenedWinReSpawn"
Command line: '60eaff78-4bdd-042d-2e72-66972efd737-suplib-3rdchild--
comment "WS_5 - XP Pro SP3" --startvm "7fdb105a-ff2f-44ab-
b209-3ed1151432b4"'(rc=-104)

The problem just started this week. I don't have allot of hair, and I'm afraid I will pull out all that is left. Help!

Thanks in advance.

Marvin

PS - Thank you to the person that corrected the code to allow a cursor to blink in Windows DOS mode. I struggled to figure out the code..... You saved me. :-)

But you didn't provide a ZIPPED VBoxHardening.log. No log, no guesses.

In the mean time, please read really carefully the following FAQ: Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues for some generic guidelines/ideas. Remember, these are guidelines, not the exact solution, you have to use your judgement...

Someone at Oracle needs to wake up and at minimum find a way to disable this 'feature'.
Honestly, checking .DLLs for valid certificates or whatever it does is BS.

It's MY computer. I want to disable the feature with the understanding that it's my decision. I want to take responsibility for my actions and don't expect Oracle to protect me from myself.

One after another, every VirtualBox installation is failing, with no solution available. Just pages of stuff that will 'maybe' fix the problem.

If there is no way to disable this 'Feature', I will stop installing VirtualBox.
It's a lot simpler to install other software than to spend hours researching and trying different solutions...

No, there is no way to disable the hardening support within VirtualBox.

... and you may of course choose whatever software you like. This is a user forum, we don't benefit either way from your decision.

If the feature can be disabled then it is worthless.

And, while it is certainly your PC, it is Oracle and VirtualBox's reputation.

The hardening log file is attached in two parts. I tried without virus scanner installed, and I don't remember any new driver updates when the problem started occurring.

I would have uploaded the error dialogue window screen shot in PDF, RFT, or ODT, but these formats are not allowed on this discussion board. This is the text from that window:
The virtual machine 'WS_5 - XP Pro SP3' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1). More details may be available in 'C:\Users\WS_5\VirtualBox VMs\WS_5 - XP Pro SP3\Logs\VBoxHardening.log'.

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {85cd948e-a71f-4289-281e-0ca7ad48cd89}
[Mod edit; Removed two-part VBoxHardening.log. See next post by 'aims' for the ZIPPED log.]

Please edit your message. Replace the two partial logs with one ZIPPED one. It's best for everyone...

Start with Avast and MalwareBytes.

I DO take this problem seriously in the event that I might have implied otherwise. I read and followed the recommendations in the Hardening Issues guide, but it didn't help me resolve the problem. I have uninstalled Avast (as mentioned in an earlier post), and Malwarebytes is the manual (passive) version.

I'm not the only one stuck, and like those others, I'm not a software developer. The hardening log isn't something that I can just read and understand; else, I would fix my own problem and would post a solution here.

I report problems not to irritate others but to notify individuals that have the capability to fix VBox software snags. I've followed all recommendations so far to no avail. I hope that that the development community can look at my uploaded log and find a fix or temporary work-around.

I updated to the latest VBox (5.2.16) for Windows. It didn't change anything to my knowledge, and I didn't really expect it to. The fix list was for other problem issues.

I have the same Hardening issue. I attached the latest Hardening.Log in case there is something different.
