XP Guest Outlook Express problem

Post by Jiger »

I have Windows XP sp4 as guest under Windows 10 Home and I am using Outlook Express for mail in the guest system. The problem is outgoing mail. I have tried all possible settings in collaboration with my ISP with no effect. My question: could the network settings in VB have any significance here. I am using "Enable Network Adapter" and attached to Bridged Adapter.
I have no problem with outgoing mail from the host.

Having the network interface set to "bridged" makes the guest appear as though it is just another machine on the network. In the Windows XP guest can you browse the internet? Some simple tests:
ping <default_gateway>
ping 8.8.8.8
ping google.com
If those work then VirtualBox has done it's thing and the issue is with the Outlook Express setup.

I have no problem to browse the internet.

Tests:

default gateway: ping could not find host computer default_gateway, control the name and try again
8.8.8.8: OK
google.com: OK

On that basis you should treat it as an Outlook Express problem and not a VirtualBox problem.

Do you happen to have any idea of what the problem with Outlook Express could be, if it isn´t related to the settings in OE?

What does actually it mean that:
default gateway: ping could not find host computer default_gateway, control the name and try again

When something is put in <>, that means that you need to adjust it according to your scenario. So if I tell you to run the command:
  • ping <DefaultGateway>
that means that you've got to substitute the "<DefaultGateway>" with your actual default gateway. How do you find the default gateway? From WinXP run the command:
  • ipconfig
Your default gateway will be listed there. Example output from my WinXP:
Ethernet adapter Bridged:
        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.107
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1
So in my case, the first command would be:
  • ping 10.0.0.1
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

I thank you very much! The test was OK, so obviously the VB does not create the OE problem.
