VT-x is not available

Post by Harvey13 »

Hello
I run VirtualBox 5.2 on Windows 10
  • Virtualization is enabled in the BIOS
    Hyper V is not activated
But When I want to run a machine, I got the error :
Échec de l'ouverture de session pour la machine virtuelle MSEdge - Win10.
VT-x is not available (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX).
Code d'erreur : E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Composant : ConsoleWrap
Interface : IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}
Former uses with W7 were correct...
I do not really understand what's wrong ?

Please read FAQ: I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests., it covers the same territory.

Hello mpack
If I correctly read the link, there is only the step 4 which seems to be the problem.
When creating a VM, make sure you choose the 64-bit version of the guest OS template in <VM Settings> | General | Basic | Version
I tried with Ubuntu and a version of MSEdge-Win10.vmdk, and both let me only choose 32 bit version in General | Basic | Version...
No way to choose 64 bits version.

Is there a settings to allow this ?
Best Regards

Please address every step of the faq. The symptom you describe means that VT-x is not available, meaning you have not addressed steps 1-3.

If the virtualisation is enabled in the BIOS and Hyper-V is not activated then you need to look at some of the other suggestions in the linked document. Anti-virus products, Avast is one culprit, have started using the virtualisation features of the processor and don't always tell you.

The FAQ is for guidance, you have to do a bit of digging around on your system, as it is front of you not us, and use the principals it gives.

This problem developed on my system after updating Win 10 to Version 1803

Tried changing BIOS as others suggested - with no success

Looked at oracle VM VirtualBox Manager to see if I could build a new machine and noted that it would only allow me to build a 32 bit machine.
The Virtual PC I had was 64-bit.

Opened Win 10 System configuation by typing "System Config" in the Search box
- Select Boot Tab
- click Advanced Options
- look at "Number of Processors"
- if number of processors = 1 then UN-Check the box
- reboot your PC
- Navigate back to "System Configuration" as above and get back to "Number of Processors" on the "Boot" Tab
- you should now be able to change the number of processors.
- you can do two different things ... either leave the "Number of Processors" Un-selected OR Select the box and choose the number of Processors you wish to enable (MUST be Greater than 1)
-Reboot PC
-Try restarting Virtual-PC; if "VT-x is not available" persists then do the following:
- Open System Config App again
- Select "General" Tab
- Select "Normal startup"
- Reboot PC
- Try loading Virtualbox PC
Hope this works for you as well as it worked for me.
