Upgrading from 5.2.4 to 5.2.6

Post by Klaas Vaak »

I recently installed VB for the 1st time ever my Windows PC - Win 8.1/64-bit.
I have downloaded v. 5.2.6, and the guest additions (5.2.7-120528) & Extension_Pack-5.2.6-120293.
Can I install 5.2.6 over 5.2.4? Will my settings be preserved?

If you mean downgrade from 5.2.6 to 5.2.4, yes, your settings and your VMs are preserved. But you must install the matching ExtPack, and it would be best if you have the same version Guest Additions as well.

Why if I may ask?

Socratis, with all due respect, I don't understand your answer. I ask about upgrading and you answer about downgrading.
I currently have 5.2.4 and want to go to 5.2.6: in my book that is an upgrade.
So my question still stands.

I really don't have the slightest idea why I read that backwards... :?

I can move freely from 4.x.x to the latest development 5.x.97 build, and everything is working, with minor differences, for example features that didn't exist in previous versions. But that's not the case between 5.2.4 and 5.2.6.

So, my answer still stands. ;)

OK Socratis, I understand, at least you are human like me :-)
So I'll go ahead and upgrade.
Many thanks for your help.

I have 1 other question:
I have now installed 5.2.6 and have Guest Additions 5.2.7 as an .iso image to install. GA 5.2.7 is basically 5.2.6 but with the bug removed, Oracle temselves recommend installing GA 5.2.7. But Mint does not accept that saying it cannot insert that virtual optical disk. Is there a way around this?

N.B. my host is Win 8.1/64-bit, and the Guest additions package is on my Windows hard disk, albeit in a folder shared with Linux.

You have two options:
  1. Mount the GAs ISO in the VM, from the VM settings, Storage.
  2. Copy/download the ISO to your Mint and mount it from there using Mint's built-in capabilities.
