Error when trying to delete a snapshot

Post by CutterX »

Hi

When I try to delete a snapshot on one of my VMs, the operation fails with the following error:

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>vboxmanage snapshot "Ubuntu 17.10" delete "Instantané 1"
Deleting snapshot 'Instantané 1' (724f0878-442d-46d5-bad5-f2ac7cbb75d3)

Progress object failure: RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE 0x800706BA
VBoxManage.exe: error: Snapshot operation failed
VBoxManage.exe: error: Code RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE 0x800706BA (0x800706BA) - RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE 0x800706BA (extended info not available)
VBoxManage.exe: error: Context: "enum RTEXITCODE __cdecl handleSnapshot(struct HandlerArg *)" at line 539 of file VBoxManageSnapshot.cpp
I'm using version 5.2.7 r120579 on Win10 64bit. This is the only snapshot on this VM. Please help.

Please reboot the host and try again. Why are you the command-line if I may ask?

Please attach a ZIPPED VBoxSVC.log as well, after having run that command.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

I've attached VBoxSVC.log. I've rebooted a few times but it didn't change anything. I use vboxmanage because the operation failed without an error in the GUI (afterwards the mouse cursor indicated it was waiting but the UI stayed responsive).

That's not something that you see every day. What's your host's free disk size? What's your VDI's size? Could you try CloneVDI and see what happens? You need to have both the VDI and the snapshot in the same directory, so I would suggest to quit VirtualBox, just to be safe. And point the clone to another hard drive, and choose to keep the same UUID.

I have 40 GB free on the main host disk. The base VDI is 9,61 GB; the snapshot is 7,59 GB. The disk sizes are different: 30 GB for the base and 10 GB for the snapshot. I've changed the disk size in the VM's settings some time after making the snapshot.

CloneVDI made a copy of the VDI but I have trouble attaching it to my VM because the UUID is already used and the "Remove" menu item is grayed out for that disk in the virtual media manager.

It turns out I didn't delete the snapshot from the VM. Despite that I could remove the snapshot image through the media manager but not the base image. After deleting the Snapshot I was able to attach the cloned VDI to my VM and it works fine, thanks.

So, that means that the whole premise was wrong from the initial post/title? You were not trying to delete a snapshot, you were trying to delete a "snapshot file" from the media manager?

No, I did try to delete the snapshot from the vm. I somehow forgot this was the initial problem...

I've lost you...

Do you want to start fresh? Just forget anything you've said so far, please try to jolt your memory and tell me exactly what you did.

I followed these steps:
1. I went to Machine tools > Snapshots. Right-clicked on my VM's snapshot, clicked "delete". It didn't work. IIRC a progress bar appeared then disappeared before completion. Anyway there was no error message, the snapshot remained here, and the mouse cursor turned into a circle which means it was waiting for something, but the UI remained responsive.
2. Tried to delete the snapshot with VboxManage, with gave me the error message in my first post.
3. Copied the VDI + snapshot into a single VDI using CloneVDI as you suggested, keeping the same UUID.
4. Went to my VM's storage parameters, tried to replace the disk with the copy. Gave me an error message saying a disk with the same UUID already existed.
5. Went to Virtual Media Manager, released and removed the snapshot image, then tried to do the same for the base disk but the "Release" and "Remove" items where both grayed out.
6. Physically deleted the base .VDI file from my host's hard drive to hopefully allow me to delete it in VirtualBox. Didn't work: the image file now had a exclamation mark next to it but the "Release" and "Remove" menu items where still grayed out.
6b. Probably restored the .VDI files, I'm not sure.
7. Went back to my VM's snapshots, deleted the snapshot. This now worked without a problem (!?).
8. Released and removed the base disk from Virtual Media Manager.
9. Attached the copied VDI to my VM.
